Re: Christmas in Paphos

The Louis Phaethon. We always stayed at the Louis Imperial which was excellent. Phaethon open at the moment as I walked past the other day. Quite often talk to people who stay there and most of them are return visitors so it must be good. Lovely one and a half mile walk to the Harbour, along the fro...

Re: one for hic

We were supposed to see Andre Rieu's Concert in Liverpool in May, 2020. Concert cancelled and rescheduled for September, which also was cancelled. We applied for a refund which, after a very long delay of 4 months, we eventually received. We will rebook again when all this is over. His Liverpool con...

Re: Farmers' union rails against overuse of pesticides

The use of pesticides and antibiotics needs to be policed as does all Health and Safety issues in Cyprus. I have no adult experience of farming but my dad was a farmer. When he sprayed his crops masks were mandatory. Also roll cages on tractors. In Cyprus I have seen farmers spraying without masks a...

Re: A few snaps of the views at Old Town this morning

Even pre-covid, I don't think the old town was getting as many visitors as it used to when we first came to Cyprus in 2002. All inclusive has had the effect of some visitors never leaving their hotel. I really think that the municipality needs to put on free bus services from the tourist areas to th...

Re: More COVID measures - partial lockdown with no limits on movement within province.

We visited King's Ave Mall today. Jumbo's was heaving, with people buying decorations. Impossible to socially distance and we got out as quick as we could. Other shops fairly quiet. Went into Marks to see if they had Christmas jumpers but no luck and ended up getting a couple from Jack Jones. Went d...

Re: Nasty lightning strike yesterday night

We just had one strike very near our house. Our Photovoltaic system OK. However, the amount of bird droppings washed off our roof is amazing. Expect now to be producing a bit more electric, as, over the last three months, our production has been down on last year.

Re: Rain

Today we were trying to remember when we last had rain. We thought it was the end of May, because it was the end of May this year when we switched our irrigation, and when we were putting plants in, the ground was still damp. Thanks Devil.

Rumbles of thunder in the distance.

Usually in October and November, we have some spectacular electric storms in Cyprus. Here in Anarita we can hear thunder in the distance and there is sheet lightning. Could we have some rain for the first time this autumn?

Re: Warm air heater

1kw of electric can produce 3kw of heat with an air con unit. No other form of heating can do this. 1kw burned produces 1 kw of heat. I am sure Max or Devil will contribute to explain the science. In fact it was a post many years ago on the Eastern forum by Devil which got us using aircon for heatin...

Re: Warm air heater

Even the older air con units, set to heat, are much cheaper to run than any form of electric heating. On the older units, for every kw you burn, you get around 3kw of heat, whereas the newer units are even more efficient. We have two new, LG units, which we have used for aircon all summer, and inten...

Re: Solar panels on all our houses

Greenair checked our house wiring before EAC inspected. EAC inspected only from the meter box, they did not come into the house to check anything. Max, I think the way to go would be with a solar pump for the swimming pool, rather than add panels. We are still on a learning curve with our solar pane...

Re: Solar panels on all our houses

Jeba, sorry do not know if our inverter can deal with more panels. If we needed more, we would look at the most cost effective way, which, if we needed a new inverter, might be to have a solar swimming pool pump, which would save us at least 8 units a day. From a very brief google search, our invert...

Re: DHL delivery service

After our first delivery with them, when they gave us a two day window for delivery, which we thought unacceptable, and could not definately say when our parcel would be delivered and we ended up picking up at their office, and complaining to Marks, ...

Re: Solar panels on all our houses

According to Greenair, you can now add to your solar panels and you do not have to get permission from EAC. Also, because of the way EAC now charge for units you use through the meter that you have banked, less than 5 cents a unit, inc vat,(Network Charges) it will not cost you more each bill, like ...

Re: Solar panels on all our houses

I know exactly how many units I have banked over the year. The meter has two readings, one for units used and one for units banked. In the first year, up to the point were EAC take units away in March, it was a case of a simple subtraction to find the difference between the two readings. In the seco...

Re: Solar panels on all our houses

When our PV panels were installed by Greenair, we were not residents. Greenair looked after all of the paper work. As Max said, the process was seamless and went really well and we have been saving on our bills now for over a year. You do not have to be residents to have solar panels installed. Our ...

And with most people, if you mention that they are breaking the two metre rule, you are met with denial or abuse. We now make sure our trolley is behind u...

Re: Coronavirus thrives on ignorance

Devil is making a very valid point about the cleanliness of masks. In March, when we arrived, the elderly man sat next to us on the plane wore a once white mask which was grey with dirt. Luckily, our plane was half empty and the steward asked him if he wanted to move to an empty row. Masks are like ...

Re: Air-cons to be installed in schools powered by photo-voltaic

Just cannot understand why every school roof and public building here in Cyprus is not covered with solar panels. Last week I read that the temperature in one school, without any pupils, was 40c. Even when it is a bit cooler, classrooms must be around 30c as pupils generate a lot of heat. I worked i...
