Maa Palaiokastro Archaeological Site

Post by Dominic »

Paphos has more than its fair share of Archaeological Sites. I had seen signposts for Maa Palaiokastro every time we drove to Corallia Beach, but had never felt compelled to visit. However, I recently flew the drone near the site, and it looked intriguing, so I decided to pay it a visit.

Read the article and chat about it below...

The hotel overlooking the site is the currently disused, I think, Thalassa Hotel. A 5* built by Leptos. Just had a look at this post. When we went to see the site at Maa some years ago, there was neither a fence, a charge or much actual attention paid to this site. It was also quite rough and overgrown.
The small dome shaped building was newly built, and if my memory is correct a few artifacts found there were displayed.
But, one of the biggest problems with archaeological sites in Cyprus, is that once they are known to have been excavated, they attract interest by all sorts of people. Many just curious,
some with metal detectors, some vandals ready to destroy it. Late bronze age settlements are few in Cyprus.
So, sites need security, hence the fence and a guard. Use of metal detectors is illegal, as is removing any artifacts. Maybe when both time and finance for a dig are available, archaeologists and students may return it it.
Sad but true.
