We recently assisted on a litter cleanup along the nature trail to Argaka Reservoir. While we were there, we couldn't help but notice the abandoned village of Makounta on the other side of the valley. We were also curious where the nature trail went once it passed the reservoir. So the other day we returned with our camera. This is what we found...

The large round building is the house of Mr. Utopos and is situated in "new" Makounta. I met him several times many years ago when he run for presidential elections.

Any idea about the fruit?

It looks like a wild or strangler fig. Did you sample the fruit? (If you're not sure whether it's edible or poisonous, I understand that rubbing some gently across your lips will soon show if you can safely eat it or not, rather than actually licking or even eating something that may be poisonous.)

I don't agree to your comments about impressive looking palm trees - the one's on your pic look a mess, like never touched for 10 years..

These Washingtonia palms should look at least like the trees on this photo...only 100 m away

Yes Dominic, it is a Mulberry fig tree. They grow much bigger than normal fig trees, and don't forget the soil where this large tree is growing is very good fertilized from the goats farm higher up....I was always collecting stinging nettles from this place in the past, indicating fertile soil!

And where there are stinging nettles, there are always dock leaves nearby, to wipe away the stings, yes?

Back to tall palm trees... I remember well my long stays at the Theseas Apartments (Despo and Phideas). Down to the next door corner restaurant to borrow their 2 section ladder (Scala) then up to the DIY store in Geroskipou to buy a sharp hand held saw, plus leather gloves in order to handle the sharp branches. Loved it!

Dragged all the branches down to by the row of Cyta phone kiosks, made a big pile of them. Ladder back to the owner. Swim, and then down to Bar St, LOL!

Next day, the council had taken away the pile of palm branches!
