The Shrine by the Motorway

Every time I drive to Limassol on the A6, I notice a shrine in a field to the left of the motorway, soon after you leave Paphos. The other day while out exploring, we found ourselves close by, so we thought we would take a look...
Read the blog and chat about it below...

Has anything to do with the explosion near Electric works, some years ago killing 14 or so?? (this is only a guess)

Yes, I think you are correct on this, I remember that crash and it was near Pafos.

The memorial to the helicopter crash is further away from Paphos, just before Kouklia. It is a very impressive structure too, far more impressive than this little shrine.

Dom, is this the Potamos tis Ezouzas river valley area, just west of Agia Varvara? Looks familiar, as walked it a few times... Amazing finds of yours, both the Shrine in the field, and the little ramshackle church (holding beatiful icons inside!)...
My gut feeling agrees with Flossie, in that these are memorials erected by the families of the poor sods who unfortunately died in that tragic helicopter accident...
I bet that over by the naval base and power station near Fyti, similar shrines (and maybe temporary churches) have been erected by the surviving families of those whose sadly lost their lives, in an accident that should really have been avoided?
Cheers- AL

So there were two helicopter crashes? That is really tragic, and also eerie.
This is the memorial near Kouklia. Five people were killed.

Sorry about the quality of the image. I shall have to return and take some more to do it justice.

Ah, here's a bit more info:

The crash relating to this shrine happened in 2006. The bigger crash happened 4 years earlier, in 2002.

It is one valley to the west of the Ezousa Valley.

Yes, I remember that at the time, the crash of the heli carrying the 5 National Guardsmen, including the high ranking one, occurred at night and it was the one that happened near Kouklia... I have also seen the memorial to that one, you couldn't miss it.
