My OH is thinking of buying a telescope to view the night sky, can anyone offer advice on the type of things he should be looking for?

I used to use a telescope before but now I use a pair of good quality binoculars and an App on my IPad called OSR Star finder with a clear sky and away from any background lights you can pick out the constellations easily. More info from here

Like most things in life, it depends on your budget. However, I'd suggest you buy a Schmidt-Cassegrain reflecting 'scope (search Amazon). Far more compact and adaptable if your needs change upscale later in life than a refracting 'scope. It all depends what you are going to look at, too. Just planets or deep space.
Celestron are good, but have a look at Meade - usually a bit more expensive but it's an area you get what you pay for.
Bear in mind that Cyprus skies in summer are frequently hazy!
