That was an suggestion from the then Chancellor Geoffrey Howe, after rioting that had caused injury to no less than 460 police officers, and the burning of 70 buildings. It does not follow that Mrs Thatcher acted upon that suggestion, nor does it mean that she was evil. In my view you cannot prove your accusations.

You should read the Scarman Report and the references to institutionalised racism in the Merseyside Policeforce. She and "her" Ministers were toying with the idea of writing Merseyside off. The rioting was confined basically to one deprived area called Toxteth, I lived through it and apart from on TV never saw any rioting. There was rioting in Brixton, why no talk of Managed Decline there?
There was no investment in Merseyside until the EU started pumping money into it in the late nineties when the Tories left office.
I really don't have to prove anything, the evidence is available.

You say 'toying with the idea' does that make one evil ? I don't think so.
You say 'institutionalised racism' within the Merseyside Police Force, how far back does your 'institutionalised' go, my husband started his police career in Liverpool in the late 50s, he tells me that there was no racism then. That said, I'm sure he came across many hardened criminals of all races, they would have all been dealt with equally.
Mrs Thatcher is no longer able to explain what did or didn't happen at that time, and you calling her evil, does not make it so.

Oh no, not more could have, might have, and probably, for Heaven's sake she was the best P.M. since Churchill, oh no hang on a minute, wasn't he a warmonger, possibly !

You should really read what caused the Riots in the first place.
Wasn't it Mandy Rice Davis who said "Well they would say that wouldn't they?" or was it Christine Keeler.

....and I wouldn’t try to convince y=ou otherwise.... my FiL is such a Thatcherite it’s unreal..... I happen to think she did some good and some really bad, particularly in making the UK a financial paradise and a manufacturing desert.

I have seen nothing to suggest that Mrs Thatcher was anything other than one of the best PM's the country has had. Long live Maggie - well her memory anyway.

She knew about cover ups everywhere.... she was pulling strings behind the scenes all over the country and if you happened to live in a working class area, those strings likely were cut leaving you without a job.

Churchill's record in WW1 is far from illustrious.

she pulled the country up from its socks...
… by squandering North Sea oil, closing the coal mines, destroying many manufacturing industries, creating extreme discontent everywhere north of Watford; yes, she was a paragon of virtue.

Hudswell, you seem to always know everything. Must be great to be you. I and from steel and mining areas and she wiped out all work. Service industries? Finance? Only for some. London is now the sleaze finance capital of the world. Don’t take my word. Read today’s Daily Mail. I’m. Sure it must be true then.
As to Churchill, he may have been the leader needed in WW2, but he was terrible prior to that. He led the Black and Tans in Ireland, subjugated workers across the country around the depression, let down the Poles. Was responsible for millions of deaths in India. If we had lost the war, he would have been hanged under war crimes.
Thatcher, as I acknowledged, did some good. However, if we were free to read the papers buried for generations, of her involvement in Northern Ireland, in the miners strike and much more....

The late and great Mrs T, what a woman, what a PM- stood up against the mob and thug rule the Unions wanted. They were beaten and we don't seem to have suffered as a result. Did alright against the Argies as well.

I agree she seized her moment as did Churchill in his time and history reflects that!
Unfortunately, Labour seem to be hell bent on self-destruction under the guidance of Corbyn to which they are oblivious!

Why is it that Mrs Thatcher was blamed for the fall of industries, when all along it was the union leaders, the likes of Scargill who brought them down. They thought they could hold Britain to ransom, and when it didn't work, blamed the government.
