Sterling Cheques

I presented 2 x Sterling cheques to be paid into my (Cypriot) Sterling account today but they were rejected because each one did not amount to the equivalent of €250.00.
New rules from Nicosia apparently.
Anyone else suffer this lately?
Ex-Barclays customer, so no UK Bank to pay them in to.
