Having just collected some dog medication sent by post from USA and had to pay €5 to the customs chappie in the post office it set my mind to wondering if we will have to pay duty on goods from the UK if there is no brexit deal.

In Ireland, it is common for the postie to collect duty on the doorstep, from non-EU sources.... Most small items from China, the UK ignores at present. Items from the US, I commonly pay shippers duty before they will release.

One thing to remember is, if in the event of a 'no deal' brexit we should be able to claim back any VAT that we have paid on goods (with conditions) that we have purchased in UK whilst on holiday, as long as you have proof of residence in Cyprus (MEU1/3?). Theoretically we should then pay Cyprus VAT when re-entering the country (Cyprus).

It wouldn't be worth the hassle just to save 1% unless it's a huge purchase!

Where have you seen that?

Best then to start using sellers from the EU I have used Amazon DE for some time now, the import customs and duty would not apply to them.

It would be claimed at the departure airport in the UK upon proof of residence in the destination country (at present it has to be a non-EU country, but after a no deal Brexit it should include the EU). It's called VAT-free shopping. When resident in Dubai, I could claim the VAT back on goods purchased in the UK when leaving the UK. It was usually the 19% VAT less a nominal amount for administration. Of course the goods themselves would have to be of a considerable value to make it worth while.

Correct
I've just bought something from .de and it came from the UK. Will that result in a problem post Brexit?
