Although this article is essentially related to the extreme cold in the USA, don't think that it is irrelevant for the rest of the world and especially Europe. The current snow in the UK is also related to the polar vortex that has slipped southwards. We, in Cyprus, have not experienced it - yet! We could have the edge of it hitting us about Wednesday, but mainly as a small drop of a couple of degrees or so and a bit of rain (snow/ice at altitude). http://weather.bnellis.eu/forecast/"The polar vortex is just the latest example of how reliable five-day forecasts have become."
How much better? “A modern five-day forecast is as accurate as a one-day forecast was in 1980,” says a new paper, published last week in the journal Science ( http://science.sciencemag.org/content/363/6425/342 )
