They are shutting down Google +. It went the same way as google's previous dip into social media. Who remembers Google Wave?

It is nothing to do with gmail though. That is unaffected.

I have received the same email but am unsure as to what I actually have in my ‘account’!

You will have been signed up to Google + automatically if you have a GMail acoount. Google + is being withdrawn. If you have not used it, you can just ignore the email.

Some people did use it. Those people will want to copy data they have posted on there (photos etc) if they still want to keep it.

Just delete the email and forget about it.

I still find amusing the emails from people trying to send me €50,000,000.

Had the same email, it was Google’s attempt at Facebook. Google drive is like Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud etc.
