There was a begger in Mansion House tube station back in the 90s, who looked in a terrible state. He was there nearly every day looking really pitiful.
I saw him once, mid-afternoon, in a pub near the oval, getting all his coins changed up. He didn't look quite so pitiful then, and was laughing and joking.

Mind you, when I was in Cambodia there was a beggar who pulled himself around on a little trolley, and had trainers on his hands. His legs were totally useless. I have never seen somebody as deformed as he was. Yet he spoke perfect English, if you actually talked to him. He had to beg, for obvious reasons, but his disabilities certainly hadn't dulled his brain.
If I am ever feeling really pissed off about a situation, and I remember him, it never fails to snap me out of my own little pit.

Sad story but at least they are out on the streets trying to make some money each day like so many buskers over here & not relying on state handouts
Interesting topic flossie

This has brought back memories of an elderly lady in a long leather coat tied in the waist by string with her silver cross pram full of black bin bags on the streets of Chester begging, little did all the people know that gave her money that she arrived every day in her Silver Shadow..........

I wouldn't equate Buskers with scammers begging for money.

Whenever I was in the past at Polis Square, there was the local beggar,( called Kakkos ) asking everybody for selinias (shillings) but was always accepted by the locals as he was a little bit simple. There were rumors at that time that he has got 60.000 CYP at his bank account. When he died people found a huge amount of money under his mattress though...

Was back in Edinburgh for 10 days in October, walking along the West End where I saw a woman walk out of a cafe and hand a beggar a pack of sandwiches and a hot drink, should have seen the disappointment in his face when not handed money. His cardboard sign had written on it homeless and hungry!

Getting a bit fed up being accosted by beggers everytime we walk into Lidls, they are Gypsies from Greece, organised, and dropped off there in a mini bus, i've complained to the manager but just got the shrug of the shoulders.

Wonder if the manager would shrug if people started to tell him/her that they were going to Paps instead?

Sorry I should of mentioned this was Eastside, but its strange that no other supermarkets in Larnaca have beggers outside their entrance, only Lidls?

Yes, I too am fed up with beggars outside Lidl (Polis Rd). I notice they only appear in warm, dry weather! Likewise the itinerant fellow who homes in on me and tries to sell me windsreen wiper blades! He can be a bit intimidating and pushy...
Yesterday while leaving Lidl, my departure coincided with the monsoonal rain. How I wished that the management there had decided to install an opaque, waterproof material on their covered parking, instead of the shade netting they currently have. Both Paps and Gdn of Eden have done the former... I got soaked while trying to down my brolly and get into the car instead of staying dry!
