Cyprus was the country with the lowest total fertility rate in the world in 2017, an Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) Total fertility rates (TFR), measure the average number of children a woman would deliver over her lifetime.According to the study, a woman in Cyprus had one child on average in 2017....

How can they tell that? With modern methods of contraception a woman has the option of deciding whether or not she wants a pregnancy.

As others have mooted I think this is a bit of a barmy survey. Unless it takes in all the possible reasons why a woman/couple would choose not to give birth then surely it's pretty pointless????

I don't know why you are getting confused. Data shows that Cypriot women will have, on average, one child each. This sort of data has been available for years. Remember the famous 2.4 children of a few decades ago?
If Cypriot women really are reproducing at such a low rate, then it spells big problems for the future, as it is a shrinking population.

Surely that is a good thing.
The planet is vastly overpopulated at the moment. It would only take two generation, 50 years, to redress the balance.

Yes but using that logic you would then have a problem with the aging population.

In my husband's family there isn't a single family with just 1 child - the least is 2 (and they're twins!) so I seriously doubt this so-called 'research'!!
Surely all that they needed to do is analyse recorded birth and death rate?

Some years ago a scientist did a survey as to how much methane gas cows were passing.
Talk about daft surveys.

Re Above.
It is not my logic, Dominic, it is a fact.
We had an imbalance in Europe 100 years ago, it sorted itself out.
We now have massive overpopulation, approx 3 times what the planet can substain. Nature will level it out.
Yes there will be an ageing population but after a few years that will decline.

You are talking on a global scale though. Cyprus does not suffer from over-population.

Yes, but that doesn't really help the aging population ratio.
