The road near Aphrodite’s Baths where a Russian couple were killed over the weekend has been closed at the decision of the police and the Forestry Department, infuriating local authorities in the area....

It is extremely tragic that these people have lost their lives on this track but I do sometimes wonder why you would even contemplate driving on some of these track when not in a 4x4
The area is beautiful and needs to be kept natural I have no idea what the solution is but whatever policing, you will always have the “one” who will take no notice......

The first time I holidayed in Cyprus I was given a leaflet for Adonis Baths. Pictures looked nice. Decided to take a drive in a small hire car, just after torrential rain in October. It was a terrible journey and many, like me, had been duped. The leaflet had said an ordinary car could travel there. It was a terrible road.

It seems pretty simple to me to have a huge sign at the road entrance stating 'dangerous road - only accessible to experienced 4x4 drivers'.

The problem is; give anyone a 4x4 and they think they're an expert off-road driver.

You can apply the same logic to swimming in the sea though. One common complaint I have seen from people is that they have found themselves on that road without realising how dangerous it is. Let's face it, once you are on it, you are on it for the duration. And once you get to the Blue Lagoon, you either have to go back the way you came or take the route via Smigies, which is safer (no cliff drops) but more damaging to the car as it is more bumpy, believe it or not. A nice big sign or two at the start is what is needed, in multiple languages.

That road is good fun to off-road on, but I agree, completely unsuitable for ordinary cars.

Last year when I was walking along the road we came across 4 young tourists who were trying to drive along it in a normal hire car. They were out of the car picking up stones etc to try and reduce the depth of the potholes so they could get the car over. They managed one bit, but still had 2 more bad stretches to go. We were chatting to them and said they had no idea the road would be so bad. They had come from "other side" (so were just doing this stretch one-way) and had only done it because Google maps showed what appeared to be a road. Since they had found that route hard in their car, they didn't want to go back that way, so hoped that this way would be better. In fact it was worse but there was nothing they could do, you can't turn around. They did make it though, we after our walk we stopped to eat the Baths of Aphrodite taverna and saw them drive past - it was a long time later though!

Do people really think signs are the answer? How many drownings do we have every season along the dangerous coastline where huge signs in several languages warn people of the danger! And don't get me going about the number of people who ignore 'No Entry' signs! Idiots all of them!
