Again, WELL DONE for all the people which have reacted to rising electricity costs, installing photo-voltaic panels on roofs or in the gardens to produce their own electricity.... and in my opinion a no-brainer in Cyprus with all the sunshine we have...

I am certainly glad that we invested in the electricity making panels... Some people thought they might die before they got their money back, but if that happens it is still a good point when selling a house.

Yes Trev,
I agree with your comment. I had PV panels installed about 2 yrs ago. I have just sold my house and my buyers are very pleased with this “extra”. It is a no brainer given the way our monopolistic electricity provider does things..if one wants to keep ones electricity bills low.
I will be considering installing some new ones on the house which I am buying...

You are not... But someone will inherit it or it will be sold.. So the person inheriting it will benefit from the panels.. Or the house will have a premium added to the price because it makes free electricity

Re electric panels, on the face of it they seem a good investment, of course selling your property may be an advantage but not always, it would take probably 10 years to recoup your investment, as far as I am concerned I probably would never get that cash back, and the reason I did not go ahead doing this so-called investment.

There you go, it is your choice of course but I do not believe it is a good investment even if they stay reliable. Just to clear this up it is not FREE electricity, my bill for fitting these panels was over 6K, so it's not free.

Prices have come down since you got your quote. More people are buying them and more companies are providing and fitting them.
I think that having these pv panels will be an even better investment if EAC keep raising their prices. Its the trade unions and their antideluvian thinking which prevents modernising and streamlining the company and thus leading to expanding the no of providers...

Our bill was around 5k and if the price has come down now that is good news. Of course the pay back period will depend on how much electricity you normally consume..

And how many Electricity Providers do you expect a Tiny country like Cyprus should have.

Dee your not blaming trade unions surly, more like grabbing companies charging more, but back to PV panels personally I also dislike the look of them, and do not think the AC Converter will last past the time it pays for the PV panels usually they don't, also where are the cheaper fitters in Pafos? I had three different quotes one only six months ago for 14 panels it came to 8.2K I reckon as Trev said I will be long dead before it pays me anything back, better to spend it on full wrap insulation on your property, that would actually save money of heat escapement. Or get a new motor and have some fun.

Some facts about photo-voltaic installations:



This is my own PV plant at Argaka which was installed Autumn 2009. I allowed this company from Limassol to use my installation for their advertising campaign as it was one of the first in Polis district. As one can see electricity production kWh of 3375 in one month March/April, sold to EAC to the then actual feed-in tariff of 0.383 Euro/kWh which is >1300 Euro in this period. (which is a 5.5 years payback time for that month) Over the summer these figures were even better and leading to a return of investment of less than 4 years. As panel prices came down more than 50% since this time, EAC stopped this feed-in tariff and introduced the so called net-metering.

PV panels produce more than 40 years electricity (as no moving parts) and the inverters come mostly with 15 year guarantee (providing the installer is not going bust!)

Of course you can keep your money at the bank with nearly zero interest or buy a car with loss of value of 50% in the first year only... .... or you can get divorced and the money is gone ...

I look at the investment in a different light. I have a 5.5 Kw system and paid about 6.5K for it. I now look on the money spent as written off. My bi-monthly bills are about €64, I now don't have the worry of massive bills coming in which used to happen in the past. If I recoup the outlay all well and good and if I don't I won't lose any sleep over it.

We also find that we are not too bothered using electricity now. We have the aircon on in Summer more than we used to before we had the Photo Voltaic panels

We mostly heat with fitted Gas fires so our lecky bill is never that bad, certainly buying PV panels would take many years to recoup. With the help of a neighbor we looked into doing just that get PV's fitted, for me at my age it just did not make economic sense, for some obviously it should but we live in a small bungalow that is not hard or expensive to heat, I have AC rarely use it, I always feel no matter how chilled out it makes you feel you still need to go outside at some point, so mine rarely get used even in this hot summer. The chap next door weighed it all up, he is the same age as me, same date and year! as a matter of fact what he did was get his bungalow wrapped in insulation, more expensive than PV's but he says far more effective regarding cost efficiency, cooler in summer and his last year heating (he uses a log burner) was very low indeed, but at 10K, not a cheap investment, again he will probably never get his investment back but at least he is more comfortable in his home winter and summer, maybe a better way I feel.We have since we moved here had roof insulation this did make a big difference to heating up this house, probably the best money I have spent here also UPVC glazing, certainly a big improvement than the alloy type we had previously.
