Not just a Cyprus related discussion, but more world wide.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/201 ... rl-inquest

This regards the girl with a sesame allergy who bought a baguette at a UK airport "Pret a Manger" outlet which was incorrectly labelled, although there was no apparent requirement for them to declare this info. She subsequently died on the plane. Her inquest is currently taking place.

I find it incredible that there are establishments which are not obliged to declare this information when it is so critical for the life of any human being. This child died because the relevant information was not available to her. So unbelievably sad for her parents and family.

I tend to think that I would never buy food from an external outlet for my child if she had such an allergy, but how restrictive would that be on the child??? An unbearable dilemma.

I have been with a family member who has a dairy allergy in a UK restaurant, and fair play to the restaurant it had the required book on allergy information, but there was only one meal which my relation could choose.

What do others think? Does anyone have this problem?

The problem with Pret is that they are usually so busy that on the outer packing of their lovely fresh sandwiches and baguettes, it says that there are no ingredients listed. What it said on mine (from memory) is that all their food is made freshly in their own on site kitchens throughout the day. They did say that there was no guarantee that it was free of all traces of nuts...

While this is a shocking story about the young girl, one can only think that to be absolutely safe people with such severe food allergies should perhaps take their own prepared snacks with them.

If you don't explicitly read that something is nut free, you should assume that it isn't.

Personally I think it is down to increased household cleanliness. Babies aren't exposed to the bugs etc at an early age, so their bodies don't develop the immunities when they are supposed to.

If you search "why are more people allergic these days" you will get lots of responses.

This one seemed quite good:

Lloyd, i thought at the time that it was not a requirement that Pret had to label this product, as the food was prepared on the premises??
In which case it was within the law, however stupid the law was at that point in time. And no, I dont agree with it.
Wherever food is prepared standards should apply, customers should be aware of the content of the food they are buying.

Still have to say though, I would not risk it, I'd rely on home made food for the journey. There may still be problems in the hotel, restaurants etc, but I would want cast iron proof that there were no allergens which may kill my child in the food she was eating. And help would be much more available on the ground than in the air.

Does nothing to help this family, my thoughts and prayers are with them.

Yep Dominic. Good clean dirt never hurt nobody.

And Smudger, I agree wholeheartedly with your comments too. 😐
