Motor insurance.Joint names.

We are now the proud owners ( well put a deposit down anyway ) of a new Nissan X-Trail.
We have taken advice due to our,,,,,well,,,,advancing years and put the car in joint names. This of course to save the song and dance if one of us should have an early date with the grim reeper

Does this effect insurance? Also when filling in for insurance quotes online there is nowhere you can state it is in joint names.
Any advice or,,,, been there done it and got the T shirt,,, would be appreciated,,,,thanks

Good tip. Also make sure that both of you can accumulate a no claims bonus annually.

Chaddy, you need to have insurance for the car before you can register it... The insurance NEEDS to show that you are BOTH joint OWNERS not just both down as insured drivers.
This needs to be on the insurance document that you take to the Dept of transport or the citizens centre

There is a difference between joint insurance and joint ownership. Jointly owned car needs to be on the log book. Citizens service centre will do it. Passport, yellow slip, and named insurers. Most insurers have no problem with both spouses as named drivers.

We went to Abbeygate who gave us a joint owner insurance certificate for no extra cost.

We have everything in joint names, apart from utility bills which can only be in one name.

And trying to change your electricity bill from say your husbands name to yours if this becomes a necessity is an appalling performance. The procedure adopted by EAC makes the whole stressful business much more stressful. They won’t do it the obvious way, simply to change the account holders name ( in our case all that was involved was change of christian name and middle initial). No, the account must be cancelled, a new one created. The direct debit has to be cancelled and a new one made ( even if the bank account no hasn’t changed!
Tons of paperwork created, and then they forgot to notify the bank and having cancelled the old debit, the new bill wasn’t paid and I nearly got cut off at home!

Did you have to get a refund on your deposit too, and pay it again?

No, I don’t think so. That didn’t happen as it was all for the same property! It would have been the last straw had they done that!
