Cyprus has still a long way to meet the EU targets for 2020 to produce electricity from renewable energies, with figures showing that only 8.6% consumed electricity came from RES. Only 3 other countries have poorer results. With prices for solar panels much lower than 10 years ago (50%),
it is more affordable for households to install a small photo-voltaic system at their premises to produce their own electricity.

Cyprus might do better in this field if EAC were more receptive to new PV installations and made it easier to get the required permit from them. Once installed they make sure that anyone who has done so, has to pay the renewable energy consumers AND producers taxes in addition... plus of course the 20%VAT! Though of course they have to credit the elec which one produces against any from the mains which has been consumed.

My own net-metering PV installation was installed recently without any problem concerning permits, even as I only rent the place. It took less than 4 weeks from application to the inspectors OK. Inclusive 19% VAT and producer/connection taxes my last bill was only 25 Euros for 2 month which I think is reasonable enough...

Max, I find it hard to understand the electric bill of 25 Euros for 2 months,
I too have a PV system that is currently in credit so I pay for no electricity consumed.
But my 2 monthly bill is still €37-63

There are several extra fees Trev, depending on the size of your installation, so larger system - more extra fees.....

Are your charged EUR25 per 2 months for that size?
Can you run a 2 bed home with a pool on 3kW?

There can be a little trick: pool owners are allowed to install a solar pool pump with 3-4 panels without having to apply for permit. So in this case your net-metering installation can be smaller, as a pool is next to air-conditioning the biggest consumer in a Cypriot household and you will perhaps be OK with as little as a 2 kWp net-metering system. But we are talking only about 10 Euros more fees, 6 times a year....

Many thanks for the hint Max - most useful. Do you know the kW size cut off to be in the EUR25 per 2 months charge scale?

Hi Max, maybe EAC has made getting a permit easier. When I had mine put in 2 yrs ago, it took 3 mths to get approval for the permit to be actualky issued and then there was a wait of about a week before the system was inspected by EAC. The payment to EAC for getting the permit approved was also quite expensive. Interestingly, when I applied for the permit, one of the questions was did I own the property.
Its good if they are now making it easier as PV is the way to go. When the batteries are availabke which are both reliable and less expensive to buy then producers will be able to store their own generated power instead of selling it back to EAC.That’s if I am correct?

With ca 2 kWp installed PV panels, the total costs for your electricity bill, including VAT, are ca 25 Euros, providing you produce at least 1 kW/h more than your consumption is.
