It depends where it is in your garden, but we had a huge aloe vera on our front. We kept it wet and scraped the soil away for weeks! We then tied a rope around it and attached to tow bar, slowly pulled away, and it came up, no problems! Otherwise a professional with the big guns!

I moved into a property in the UK and planted a leylandii hedge which I planned to grow to about 3-4 feet as an outside border for the front garden. Hadn't even finished planting before my neighbour came out and told me he would put salt on the roots if it interrupted his view! Replied that if anything happened to the hedge then he would be the first to be investigated.

Cut the shrub down close to the soil and then cover the ground with a transparent sheet (plastic) weighing down all around to prevent it being blown away. The heat from the sun will kill any bugs, spores or pests in the soil and also prevent any new growth from the shrubs roots as the excessive heat will have killed it off.
When you're ready to plant just take off the sheet and water the soil.
