Nearly six out of 10 drivers use a mobile phone while driving, with women more likely to do so than men, according to a survey carried out by the Cyprus Institute of Statisticians and published in Phileleftheros on Wednesday.

Institute chairman Chrysanthos Savvides told the newspaper that a recent survey showed that 59% of drivers in the Republic of Cyprus admitted to using a mobile while driving, 33% said they did not and 8% declined to answer.

Town residents were more likely to flout the law — 75% of town residents admitted to mobile use while at the wheel compared to 43% of those from rural areas.

And women drivers were more frequent offenders than men – 65% compared to 53% for male drivers.

They survey also covered the type of use with 62% of those admitting to using their mobiles saying they did so in order to send text messages and 38% in order to talk on their phone.

“Even though we do not have data on how many fatalities are due to driving while using a mobile phone, the results of the survey are a cause for serious concern,” Savvides told the newspaper.

“Each one of us should comprehend the serious risks to drivers and others from using a mobile phone while driving and should refrain from doing so in order to avoid unnecessary fatalities and long term serious disabilities,” he added.

Good video and so true. But nothing seems to get through to people here.. On the phone... texting... youngsters roaming around the car.. No seat belts.. They just don't care

My wife was sat at some traffic lights, and was looking at her messages, got caught and paid an eighty euro fine, no complaints, I always pull over when my phone goes, mainly because I have a problem doing two things at once.

What's wrong with hands-off phones in cars? I've been using them for years. If I encounter a situation requiring my attention, I just tell my interlocutor to hang on a minute. If I have to call (very rare), I just press one button on the steering wheel and speak the person's name.

My habit of accidently leaving the phone at home helps me out here.

You are not answering my question. Why do so many people use hand-held phones when driving, when it is so unnecessary? Okay, I agree it is difficult to do any texting on a hands-free phone . Even so, I believe that even that is possible on a top of the market system which may even include text-to-voice systems!

There is no difference between talking with a front seat passenger and talking with someone on a hands-free phone! In both cases, if extra attention is required because of a traffic situation, you stop talking and concentrate on the situation, and resume the conversation afterwards.Multitasking doesn't come into it.

Must agree with Hudswell and Austin7. If my hands free rings I just say I'll call back and hang up. Not feasable to give 100% concentration when driving and trying to hold a conversation, something's got to give.
