Insurance

We come over to Cyprus for 6 weeks of the year (for now) and have a car that is left in our complex’s covered parking area when we’re in the UK

I insure the car for the whole year which seems to be a waste. I am wanting to only insure it when we’re in Cyprus. Does anyone do something similar and if so who do you insure with?

My current provider will only insure for a minimum of 4 consecutive months so am thinking of ditching them if I can find something more suited to my needs.

Thanks for your help

Get in touch with Atlantic Insurance. We come out to Cyprus for the summer periods and when not in use the car is downgraded to 3rd party fire and theft and is left at the airport when not use. We usually save about 150.00 euros a year when the car is not used. this discount is given when we renew each year. Good insurance company and never had any problems. You have to go into the office to sign a form in person to suspend the fully comp insurance. Others on our site in Tala leave their cars as well. Can only recommend them.

Can't disagree with anything you say there.

Just had our renewal quote which was circa €350 with a circa €150 discount for 'suspension' of the policy.

Personally, I do not now use the Atlantic, but I would think not having full insurance cover could be an expensive mistake, fire, floods, theft, and damage and only a third party cover, not a good idea, you may save a few euros but the cost could be far higher to you, don't risk it, and why we have insurance in the first place.

Certainly, my home and contents are covered by Abbygate, they certainly cover earthquake damage and that includes your car undercover, I have just read my Policy cover, but as you say better ask at your insurance office what cover you do have for your motor.

Short story, my friends left their brand new CRV at their villa, when they came back rodents had eaten through the main wiring of the car and it would not start, the cost was not covered by his insurance, make sure you have this cover if leaving your car, even undercover. You'd think with all these cats around rats would not be a problem

Fortunately we have not had wires chewed through. But a few years ago we did have rats under the car bonnet. The latest problem a couple of months back was birds nesting in the engine area... :-(

The third party bit is only when the car is left "Parked Up" whilst the owners do not require its use. As soon as they come back full, cover can be activated immediately (a phone call or email to Atlantic prior to arriving in the country) hence saving money....an eminently sensible thing to do.
Yup

That's exactly how it happens. :D

Flossie, fortunately, I have all of my insurance needs with this company because I had a bad time with "A" over a claim, Abbygate does indeed cover earthquakes if your car is on your property during a quake (god help us all) and if in use at the time, again personally I would not go down the Third party rout even if it may save you a few euros, peace of mind, but do remember those Rodents, not much you can do about those. Also if using "A" then stay away from deep water on the roads, a warning! PM if you wish to know why.

Hudswell no it is not a sensible action to take, anyone could or should understand it could be very costly to do this. Keep your full comprehensive cover on your motor that is stored here but do let your insurance company know what you are doing.

Hudswell yes I did, and I am not the only one either, but no intentions of slagging them off again, water under the bridge and all that, you do as you wish, but I would prefer to have full cover even if I did leave our cars on a covered drive (as we do), not going to do that though I have never left the Island since I arrived. Cyprus is in an Earthquake zone as you are probably aware, we hope it never happens to an extent of property damage for any of us, but it could so why risk third party insurance, seems crazy to me.

And it is nothing like turning your Internet off.

And for sure there are plenty of Rodents around. :D

Well, I would not take that chance no matter who my Insurers where. Your choice, of course, I hope it would not come back to bite anyone here doing this.

My vehicle damage was not done by any Earthquake, but floodwater that my then insurer said it was an act of god! whos god was that I asked, I got the usual Cypriot shoulder shrug, but as I say literally water under the bridge, watch out going through Kissonergra during a thunderstorm, maybe that's what the insurance company meant saying it was an act of god, again read that small print on your policy. I remember a few years back a couple were washed way down a gully in their car, towards the sea, both perished leaving a large family, it was all very sad.

Many of the acting forums of that time did raise some funds for those of the young family that remained.
