Hudswell wrote: Tue Feb 14, 2017 4:32 pm It must be true it's in the Guardian as well🙄 European Technocats pooping themselves and desperate to hold their failing club together. It states that individual countries will have to decide on the arrangement after Brexit. Quite why Cyprus would make it diffcult for the many thousands of British Expats, pouring thousands into their economy and taking into account the many thousands of Cypriots living in the UK, is frankly beyond me. As devil,so eloquently puts it "Scuttlebutt", i do like that word....although Horse Manure is also appropriate I think.
As I understand it approx. 1 million Cypriots live in the UK.
If we go they go, simples.
Geoff.

Whilst not disputing these figures, of course a census is dependent upon people actually filling in the form and returning it. I found the following report on Wikipedia:

"Evidence submitted by the Home Office to the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee in February 2011 suggested that there were about 300,000 Turkish Cypriots living in the UK"

I think you are all being much too hard on Mr Meldrew.
He is probably simply presenting "alternative facts" in the style of the Trump administration.
Also, it is Valentine's day, after all, and young Geoffreys is probably enjoying his 1 millionth glass of wine with his dear wife ))

:) :) :)

Also worth noting that the status of Cypriots in the UK is different from Brits in Cyprus.
They are Commonwealth citizens and as such the regulations are different.

Cheers

I believe the Mail stopped the use of Wikipedia as a sole source of information in 2014.

Termites Dream wrote: Wed Feb 15, 2017 11:10 am I came across this, as it is the new hot topic of "Fake News" from the Huffington Post.

The Daily Mail has been removed as a “reliable source” on Wikipedia after the news group was deemed “generally unreliable”.

Some 12,000 links to the Mail, and its website MailOnline, will now be gradually removed by volunteer editors on the encyclopedia.

But is this Fake News?? :D
Wiki is great for non-political stuff - if you want to know some scientific formula or how much a volcano weighs it is invaluable...

But it is completely biased politically and of course pretty much anyone can edit it and add their own biased views.

I was going to write more about it but I stumbled across an article that pretty much encapsulates my views...

Wikipedia joins the tabloid-haters
Wikipedia has banned the use of the Daily Mail as a source of information on its site. The self-styled ‘library of the web’ has decided the largest tabloid news site in the world is ‘generally unreliable’ and has a reputation for ‘poor fact-checking, sensationalism and flat-out fabrication’. Yes, a crowd-sourced website that can be edited by any Tom, Dick or Harry is now fretting about facts.

The Daily Mail is subject to libel laws, and staffed by trained journalists. This is more than can be said for Wikipedia, which is hardly famous for its reliability. In the past it has included public entries calling actor Gary Oldman a ‘giraffe’, asserting that footballer Thierry Henry ‘was born a c**t and remains a c**t’, and accusing teeny-bopper band the Jonas Brothers of having genital warts.

Whether or not you like the Daily Mail, to denounce its journalistic reputation without proof is unnecessary and wrong. Every online paper will contain occasional inaccuracies, but this is the nature of online news reporting.

Wikipedia’s editors need to be honest about their decision – they don’t like the Daily Mail because of its politics. Preaching against the Daily Mail is an easy and lazy form of virtue-signalling, exercised by people trying to demonstrate their PC credentials. From campaigns like Stop Funding Hate to students’ union bans on tabloids, there is a cultural trend towards banning opposing views. Wikipedia’s decision to remove the Daily Mail is part of this censorious climate.
If Wiki bans links from the New York Times, Huffpo, and the BBC to name a few it may re-gain its credibility...

Libel doesn't necessarily come into it. If you make up a lot of stuff about Brexit for instance, who is actually going to sue?

Well, it could prevent you from saying untruths about a remainer for instance, like calling them a racist or a xenophobe or something... ;)

Well if some one called me a racist or a xenophobe, I wouldn't get annoyed or lose any sleep over it. Mind you, I might think they were a bit thick :-)
