Even when it is very impressive, not many people know this water feature. Situated in which village of Paphos district ?

That’s very interesting, I have been to Lysos but have never seen this place previously!

I was only guessing. I assumed it is the water feature below the church. There is a picnic spot on the above left too.

Some info from the village council:

The main church of the village is dedicated to "Panagia Chryseleousa". It was constructed around the end of the 15th or in the beginning of the 16th century and it belongs to the -so called -Frank-Byzantine rhythm, which combines Byzantine and Gothic elements, a dome and arches. The architecture of the church symbolizes an older, Byzantine type with a single-aisle and the north and south parts of the cross, sketchily formed in the north and south walls, condensed. The drum-like base of the dome is eight-sided externally. The stonework is evenly structured and carefully done. Various interventions were made upon the church from time to time. The older ones were probably made in the beginning of the 17th century when the gothic-style window of the Sanctuary's apse was walled up and a niche was created in the apse's interior in its place, the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus delineated in it. Also, in the beginning of the 20th century the west wall of the temple was demolished and an expansion was made so that the widened church would respond to the needs of the community. The church is externally decorated by two coats of arms, which are probably "spolia" and were used for decorative purposes. One of them belonged to the known mediaeval family of the Gourrs while the other is similar to the coat of arms of the noble Alice Neville, which lies upon her tombstone in the Armenian church of Nicosia.

Thanks again, Max. I am interested in the history of village churches. I wonder if you know anything about the old Church in Letymbou which poses several puzzles when looking at the interior? The layout and the sudden changes in floor levels can be a bit disconcerting as it is quite dark inside...

Is the church in Letymbou open for visitors? I have a book of it with more than 30 photos of beautiful frescoes and would like to do a photo reportage..

Yes it is Lysos. We went there when we went with Paphos City of Culture tour.

A beautiful area. We did a run there a few months ago. Through stunning countryside, saw some beautiful wild orchids and lots of picturesque spots. The arches by the water were very welcome to us runners at the end of a long arduous race!

We first visited Lysos to do a geocache, a few years ago. I was struck then by how beautiful the area was. I haven't blogged about it yet because I didn't want to front load the blog site with the cream of the region, so to speak. Given the interest shown here perhaps it is time...
