After I have seen the article in CMail from Raisting/Germany with a blurred image of the Blood Moon I am not anymore embarrassed to post my own pics on here...

This image shows the area, 10 km away, where the moon suppose to raise, in the last sun rays...


So, here we are 8 PM, long before the eclipse was starting... as one can see: clouds are arriving....


This image is the most "red" one I managed


As the clouds are moving in it is very difficult to take good pics and the humidity does not help

So now its starts with the shadow of the sun, the promised "red" did not appear...


More than half in the shade now, still no read

and now the biggest disappointment for me, as the moon suddenly appears red, but I could not get a good image with my settings and no tripod.

Is there anyone who could enlighten me as to how put the camera settings right for the last image of the Blood Moon fully in the shade of the Earth. Perhaps PhotoLady knows best. The camera was laying on a tilted surface as I have not used a tripod. Zoom ca 800 mm. I already googled, but could not find a solution.

To get decent night sky shots I think you really need a tripod, as you need a longer exposure.

I previously got decent long-exposure pics w/o tripod by using the count-down timer to activate the shot (click the shutter) if you know what I mean.

Yes, they do say if you don't have a tripod the best way is to use your camera in the Timer mode. The other alternative is to buy a remote shutter release switch.

I'm not much into stars and planet photography so I've never really tried long exposure photos nor do I like those kind of slow motion flowing water shots.... I did however, buy a tripod early last year and I also got with it a monopod, which I have used here in UK on very windy days and found it helps. Some days you can hardly stand still so I used to wrap myself and my camera around a spare lamppost by the jetty. It could be worth a try if you can pick one up relatively cheap, but test the timer option first to see if it's any clearer.... I've used the tripod on the very odd occasion to capture the birds in the back yard but each time I set it up, they all disappear!

In the beginning when I switched from my compact digital to my DSLR I did find some of the tips this guy, Moose Winan gave out on his facebook page and purchased the cheat cards just after I purchased my Nikon in 2013. I printed some of them off and then glued the cards into a small spiral notebook which now lives in my equipment rucksack for when I go off on a mission to shoot something new:

Meanwhile, I've been concentrating on the stock photography market and have managed to sell a few over the last couple of months but even more exciting is that some of my photos have also been added into the Premium Collection on the site where I host my stock images and now Getty Images have spotted some of them and selected them for their creatives collection.

Incidently, if anybody is viewing that Getty Images site and feels like using some of the images without permission, be warned that they have probably the most persistent lawyers in the business.

Sometimes, things turn out better when you don't try too hard
Frustrating as it may seem, these things are sent to try our patience.... I don't have very much of that, I'm afraid.
Keep at it Max and tell us the secret when you get there

You are perhaps right, I tried too hard in the night of the eclipse. So last night I had another go when the moon arrived at an low angle and I could place the camera on the ledge of my fire place instead using a tripod. I went on manual setting and played with the time (shutter on medium)
from 1/10 on, until I had the impression on the monitor the image is quite focused. The results were much better than the nights before even when it was same humid. Even with >1200 mm zoom it was less blurred...(it is perhaps in my genes that I don't give up that easily...)
