You can't blame Amazon for that. Had the couple contacted Amazon in the first place, rather than their bank, the matter would have been swiftly dealt with.

For a start, they never received the item. So they would have been refunded on that basis alone.

Maybe it´s worth buying insurance against unauthorised use of your credit card or online accounts. I´m paying € 7,95 per year for that peace of mind.

The problem is YOU have to prove its unauthorised use.

It's not really a problem. Every time I've been a victim of online fraud, the banks have refunded without any fuss whatsoever. And YOU don't have to prove anything. In each case I have told them about unauthorised use they have assumed I was telling the truth. Normally it is obvious anyway, as the goods will be outside of your usual purchasing habits.

The flip side is that I would get into occasional issues if I actually bought something unusual. But a quick phonecall would sort that out.
