Comforting to know that the system works! Received a txt alert this morning from my Cyprus bank advising that my card had just been used in a transaction for 64,99 euros. Phoned the bank to inform them that it was not me, card cancelled, new card will be at my branch in 3 days & account reimbursed.
Whoever thought of txt alerts was a genius

It does happen automatically....but you can inform the bank as to what amount triggers the text.

As far as I am aware the BOC text me when any amount is taken from my card.

Tried on-line to set up the alert system for our existing cards last summer but system was down and so had to go into the branch to do it. New cards in other banks have it set up automatically. A great system!

Hellenic Bankk offer this on both debit and credit cards. Works great. You get an advice about one second after the transaction is made.
Ditto for me re BOC - when withdrawing cash my phone buzzes the alert almost before I have taken the money from the machine.

As a warning to visitors who have UK cards and don't use them till they get to the airport on their way back. Be ready for your transaction to be denied and then you get a txt asking if it's you. Embarrassing... I know, I was that passenger holding up the queue arguing that it couldn't possibly be declined
