I never used to notice the sound of passenger aircraft over us in Tala , but just recently have been hearing them .
Is it a new route , or is it just me , never noticed it before .
Or was it because it was a noisy Fokker ?

Mr Blobby,I live in the same area as you. But usually the only aircraft that I see are military helicopters, also the larger ones used for firefighting occasionally. When there is a military exercise on we see pairs of Israeli fighters which come over quite low and make a lot of noise! Sometimes when the surrounding area is very quiet and the breeze is in the right direction I can hear noise from aircraft on the approach to Paphos airport, but it isn’t very loud.
In fact civilian aircraft as far as I know have to stick to the airways which are controlled and are mainly closer to the coast, though there is a cross country route which goes roughly from Coral Bay and follows the route over towards Polemi/ Stroumbi and then on towards Polis. This route avoids flying over the hills and higher ground. Cypriot Military aircraft seem to have less regulations about where they can go.

We certainly in the past have had flights from Larnaca passing over the Polemi area.

Two pilot where advised to keep a look out for an aircraft below at there 12 o’clock, and that it was a Fokker.
One of the pilots replied “ I have been wanting to say this for years I CAN SEE THE FOKKER NOW!”

>mrblobby..did your app tell you what altitude this little Fokker from TUS Airways was at the time it was overhead Tala (assuming it was..more or less)?
I did not turn on the app when I first heard the plane , so by the time I did it it was up to 31,400 ft . But the route appears to show it went over me .

I think you will find there flying to the north of Limassol in order to keep the air space clear over RAF Akrotiri.
Just in case the RAF need to get aircraft in the air at high speed.
This has been going on for a few weeks now!

Tonight's Larnaca to Athens flight took off heading East. It then did a 180 degrees left turn and then flew well to the South of Nicosia and then out to the North of the Troodos Mountains going over the sea around 15 km to the North East of Polis

This all makes emminent sense now, diverting west bound planes out of LCA to keep the skies above RAF Akrotiri nice and clear for fighter/bomber ops.
That then begs the question, WHY? Wossgoingon?

So are they landing at LCA from the west via this new 'shorter route', Trev, may I ask politely?

As HIC says the aircraft take off and land into the wind.. Last night they were then doing a left turn and heading to the North of the Troodos mountains , and to the South of Nicosia and then out over the sea.
You can check the live data, here..

A direct line from Larnaca to Athens goes to the North of the Troodos Mountains

The Cyprus Mail warned during the recent Syrian airstrike that civil aircraft would be taking "tighter flight path" over Cyprus, I take it that this was that route, maybe call the airport for confirmation, although I would imagine it is a temporary flight change.
Lloyd Cyprus has two/three fighter type helicopters, Russian Hindes I believe, but no fast fighter jets. You see the helicopters regularly on exercise over our area.

Yes, it was Cyprus’s military helicopters which I was refering to in my earlier post. At one time they also had a couple of light aircraft but lost them in accidents. One was when a young Cyprus military pilot went off his proper route when he decided to do some low flying over his girl friends village near Limassol. Unfortunately while doing this the wing of his aircraft hit the tower of the local church causing the aircraft to spin out of control and crash. He was killed and people in near by houses fortunately wern’t killed. The aircraft was destroyed.
