Over Napa way , rents are going through the roof, and many local and holiday workers, cant afford to rent any more, could this be a solution?

Palma attracts about 10million visitors per year ( Cyprus should crack 4 million this year with Russians finally exceeding the Brits ) whilst Barcelona ( pop1.6M) who have announced a similar project, a mind blowing 30million. The answer at the moment seems to be to tax the visitors

let's hope the Spanish have more success in diverting the funds raised into the promised projects than most governments but let's not hold our breath on that.
According to figures here 61% of arrivals in Cyprus are heading to recognised starred hotels and a mere 17% to apartments but that still represents a nice chunk of uncollected revenue to the government and Airbnb seem to be the whipping boy de jour throughout the EU.
Cyprus is barely out of the starting blocks in terms of numbers of visitors and no one is protesting on the streets with placards saying "tourists go home" as in other European cities but it does need to try to firstly increase winter tourism by ensuring that places stay open as part of their licence and how the stellar growth in world tourism is shared here either in all inclusive hotels or a growth in apartment and room lets which all figures show greatly enhance the local economy and create more local jobs rather than workers from places like Rumania and Bulgaria. With youth unemployment here at 24% that must be welcome news. Let's just hope they don't tax the private rental market out of existence .

Which figures show that all inclusive hotels are good for the local economy?

This mornings on Sky News, a holiday company top man says Turkey is outselling Spain and the Canaries by some margin, my thoughts would be it is a bargain destination your cash would go a lot further, as indeed he said, it is all down to the value of the pound and it has impacted it seems many other destinations.
Have to say there are many holidaymakers in and around this area so maybe Cy is in for a good year, financially.

I suppose if you are going all inclusive and not going to move out of your hotel for a fortnight, it does not matter where you go.

I would not go on holiday to Turkey for a few reasons, one being the hassle you get walking around shops and bazzars. The other, the political situation, and how many people have been imprisoned for opposing the president.

Presumably they go to the nice beaches and bury their heads in the sand.

Hear, hear to that... I have always found the Turkish people generally to be both friendly and very helpful to tourists.
Something that some people who work in the tourist sector here whether in hotels,shops or restaurants are not always very good at.... And as for the taxi drivers at the airport who often seem to fail to understand the importance of good manners and a pleasant attitude!

After watching "Midnight Express" a couple of times, any wish or desire to travel to Turkey as a holiday tourist totally evaporated in my mind...

I am reluctant to visit Turkey, or Dubai or similar places where hypocrisy rules when it comes to tourists. I'd rather countries were up front on their attitude to visitors....
