Thanks for info Trev. Our dogs were registered and microchipped immediately. Licence in Peyia is only I think €25 per year for both dogs.

In cases where the council doesn't have sufficient funds to operate a pound the law stipulates that the
council can use a regional shelter that would be funded by state aid.
A bill was passed last year to regulate the whole issue of responsibility, registration and fines as previously
there was little structure in place.
You can find some more info on the bill in
this news article.

I asked our local mukthar where the money went, They said the village was too small to support a pound but they call paphiakos and they charge a fee for collecting the stray. It has been proven, because someone left a Labrador tied to our green bin and they came and collected it. They charge €32.50 I was told.

but if they don't then why should people pay it?!!
Well they may well be fined if they don't - fair or not.
I understand completely where you are coming from, however it will be the ordinary resident that ends up
with a financial penalty regardless of our concerns as to the operation of the scheme.
Just to add that the Municipality of Geroskipou has issued a similar statement today - but giving
residents ten days to comply.

As ever most Brits and probably most expats will obey the law and get their dogs chipped and reg. But what about the Cypriots? How many of them will bother? The dogs that attacked that poor woman were owned by locals. How many hunting dogs have chips and are reg... that’s probably more like a bad joke!

Just do the right thing, and dont bother with what others do or not do..... the owners of the dogs that allegedly killed that women, are locked up as far as I know.

Out of interest, has anyone ever received an invoice from their local Council, for a dog licence ?
I have never received one from Polemi Council.

So although you have never received an invoice, do you get a piece of paper ie a licence ?

Really, so all the Cypriots who have a dog are going to be registered, dream on, I am afraid this does not happen and will not happen, there are at least two kennels locally that have many locally owned dogs, I bet very few are registered, nice thought if impossible to enforce, they even allow dog poisoning & cats surely a more serious act against dogs and animals in general, our dog is registered and chipped, but apart from the "chip" a compleat waste of time and money! as it seems only us ex-pats seem to do this, in general that is.

In our village and I assume it is standard but who knows, you cannot get a licence until you dog is chipped and vaccinated. I had to take the vet book to the office, which has microchip nunber and vaccinations showing up to date. They phtocopy and yoi recieve a paper licence abd a receipt. Detaiks of the dog and the info regarding it are jeot at tge office but we di not get a reminder fir renewal. If you are late oayingm they backdate it and will not take taje ut even a day earlier!
