Saving electricity/gas every day when you prepare hot water for your coffee/tea in a kettle, is easy to achieve:

1.) you measure exactly the amount of water you are going to need.

2.) as soon as the water starts bubbling you switch off the electric manually and don't wait until it does it automatically. (or switch off the gas)

It adds up within a year as electric kettles are using 2500-3000 Watt/h. And your black tea tastes better when the temperature is not 100 c.
Green tea is even better when the temperature is between 65-70 c.

When we were on expensive electricity during the day, in summer between June and September, we used to fill a huge flask with boiling water, just before 9am before the tariff changed. This would see us through the day for coffee, and we usually only used around 2kw of electric during the day.

Regarding my own habits I use my electric kettle 5-6 times every day to produce either tea or instant coffee. So if my kettle is on for two extra minutes, because I did not measure the correct amount of water and led the automatic switch off, then it would be ca 5x2 minutes = 10 min/day.
Within a year it adds up to app 3600 min. = 60 hours. My kettle is rated 3 kw which brings the total consumption to 180 kw/h. With the new tariff
it would be 36 Euro. (20 cent/kwh) at the moment.

Boiling water is not needed for coffee, instant or ground, in fact it burns the coffee and makes it taste bitter.

Life's too short. OK not filling up a kettle just to prepare one cup of coffee is not mentally challenging so theoretically I am down to overspending by €18 per annum. Using or not using boiling water for coffee is a personal preference and my preference is to use boiling water. Maybe I like coffee a little bitter. Tea certainly requires boiling water.

Where does heating cold filter coffee up in the microwave come in the grand scale of things?

When making coffee I always put the milk into the cup first, and then add boiling water, takes away that bitter taste.
