Wow. Brexit ripples through all the way to Tala square. It does really suck. Maybe they could invite Boris for a stand-up comedy show. He is of not much use for anything else anyway

Hmm, there is a large car park under the church, but I don't think I've ever seen a car in it!!

I remember when we first bought in Tala in 2003(off plan) it was the height of the building and sales to the British were very high and I said to Marios
( local bar owner) " Don't you mind that all these developments are taking over the village and that there are more British than locals". He said not and basically the more the better. The complex that we bought on was architecturally quite attractive built into the hillside but many were not. It seems to me now that Cyprus is in danger of being completely taken over by the mega rich Russian community who,whilst probably keeping the Island afloat, are helping to destroy the Cypriot culture which is so sad.

Whether the immigrant is Russian or British would make no odds to the local businesses trying to make a coin out of them. The problem the villages have is that the youngsters seem to prefer the lure of the city. Without immigrants a lot of the villages would die out. There would be more abandoned places for me to explore, but that's not the point. The only difference I can see between the Russian immigrant and the British immigrant is that the Russian immigrant brings more money and is younger. Both will result in a change in the feel of a village, yet without them, the village may well die.

Short of banning young Cypriots from leaving their villages, what else is there to be done?

Cyprus needs people who will bring money into the economy, will not be a burden on the state and behave themselves, , you wont find many Russians working cash in hand, decorating/working markets/bar work etc etc , never declaring earnings etc using their health card EHIC illegally, living here long time with out registering with the Cypriot authorities etc etc.. the Irony is the people moaning about the Russians taking over Cyprus are immigrants here themselves...google how London and other areas of the UK are being bought up Rich foreigners before having a pop at the Cypriots doing the same.

All Inclusive holidays are in danger of ruining most resorts in Europe that the British frequent. Many travel companies now only offer AI - which devastates the local economy. Restaurants around the hotels close then the holidaymakers complain that there is no life outside their hotel...

The thought of eating the same buffet for a weekend, never mind a fortnight, sharing my leisure with Brits necking 'free' booze fills me personally with dread. I don't like anything other than B&B when in a hotel, as the fun for us is exploring and sampling the local atmosphere and restaurants.

I should add about Tala.....

I've only gone there once in over 10 years. Found the road into the village strange and was unsure if I was going to find the centre. Eventually came to the square and couldn't see any parking, other than at a restaurant. I ended up going in there.... so my experience was pleasant, but the views weren't as you get in other hillside villages and I wasn't in any rush to return.... unless I'm told otherwise!±

Jimgward,the narrow streets behind the village square in Tala are picturesque and the view from what used to be called The
square Bistro is superb! ( Not sure what it is called now)Tala is not that high and differs from the hill villages perhaps such as Kathikas. Many will remember the old guy who we knew as Sid who would have a blazing fire and supply you with his home made,very strong booze ,often with his donkey outside. His hands were enormous and the tale went that he had killed his wife with a shovel and had been let out of prison when the invasion occurred and that Maria had been his prison warder!! Sadly there does not appear to be so many characters about now wherever you live!

HIC, a very old fashioned term for working class if I may say so.It seems you still believe in the class system then so I wonder where you would put yourself?

Tala reminds me of Geroskipou which has also been upgraded in recent years. Looks better but has lost the 'village feel'.

But overall do you not think it’s a vast improvement on what it was? I certainly do ....... and a big to the mayor for making it happen!

I suppose in the good old days when the Brits came flocking to Cyprus bringing their 'baggage' with them they were not destroying the Cypriot culture.

I couldn't get the logic there, either.

After all, the Cypriots are only doing what they need to do to survive & prosper .............. and remember we are all interlopers be it Brits decades ago, Russians over the last few years & Chinese maybe to come!

It is only in the view of Brits that a problem exists. I would suggest that Brits have had more of an effect on Cypriot culture than the Russians will ever have. As far as concreting over parts of Cyprus, I don't think you can lay that at the door of Russians, or come to that any other 'immigrants'.

Good post, but not all Brits think this way, in my view its the few Brits who still hanker for the last days of the Raj who think this way,

A British friend of mine is bringing his yacht over to Cyprus as we speak, the only berth he could get in the Limmasol area is at the new marina, St Raffial etc are full.. so to answer your question on how many do they need is, allot more...he will be paying £ 18, 000 a year just to moor the thing, he will be spending allot on fuel/supplies, flying over many times with his family and friends using the local stores/ restaurants etc etc, he will be putting allot of money into the economy, the money will help the workforce...your retired so keeping a job and feeding your family...isnt high on your list but for many Cypriots its a God sent ..as for your Britains Colonial past in Cyprus wasnt all bad, no one wants reminding on how that ended.
