Please does anyone know if I can seal knots in wood with a clear matt varnish, before painting ? I have used this to seal stains on walls before painting, but will it seal knots, or do I have to buy a specific product ?

Thanks

Jackie

You can actually buy a product to seal knots. Some knots aren't active or properly solving, depends on the wood. Red pine, commonly used for door facings, skirtings, stairs etc has a knot that can weep.

If the knot seems as though it is not weeping, then some filler before painting should be enough. Some modern paints, being water-based, can show a greasy mark over knots. That's one reason to use knot sealer. Varnish, in theory, isn't good for over-painting. the paint tends to knot adhere properly (couldn't resist that one)

Thank you for your reply, not weeping, but very dark, I think they will show through white paint. So knot sealer it is then, not, not sealer

'Head of painting' here always refers to 'knotting solution' which I assume you can buy for such a job.

Luckily, I'm not allowed to do painting as apparently, I put it on wrong!!!
