Trump's State of the Union Speech

I listened to this live this morning. Brilliant, like he said when he was elected he was going to sort out the political elite club in DC etc, and sort out the Economy, Tax system, Health care, Immigration, and so on.
How refreshing to have a man of action, a business man, at the USA helm.
More please!
Amos.

The EU will have taken note of Trump's reference to his forth coming free and reciprocal trading arrangements which means the EU's Single and very protective Market has to be liberalized to trade with the USA. This will entail a Treaty Change which many of the existing 28 countries of the EU will not endorse. End of Single Market, end of EU.

Amos, you still appear to ignore your hero Trump's views as a misogynist, racist, extreme capitalist and indeed, anti-semite... because he endorsed the US embassy in Jerusalem.... Those GOP blinkers are hiding a lot....

He is one president I would gladly welcome a successful assassination upon.... I don't believe I am the only one with these black thoughts.

Well both you and PhotoLady exhibit unjustified and unsubstantiated anti-Trump obsession.
I mean. for example, prove to us he is a racist.

There’s evidence of Trump in his business days, marking CVs when interviewing people.... to note their colour and creed!

Humbug. That does not make him a racist.

I have to agree with Amos here. Admittedly some time ago but I seem to remember that any job application always asked your nationality, ethnicity and religion.I am not saying it was right but it happened. I even remember one potential employer asking me if I had any children or intended to have any!!!

Some time ago they used to have signs saying "No blacks, No Irish, No Dogs". You don't get that any more, precisely because it was racist. Similarly, people no longer ask for ethnicity etc on CVs because it is about as overtly racist as you can get. You are filtering based on race. You may not be insulting people, or burning crosses, but you are certainly being racist. The fact that it no longer happens is obviously a good thing. Similarly, there is no segregation on buses, or separate drinking fountains.
I guess it is all about timelines. If Trump was marking CVs 30 years ago, then as Poppy says, so was everybody else. You cannot accuse one person of doing exactly the same as everybody else. If he was marking them 3 years ago, then that is a different story.

Apologies for diverting this thread but this discussion about racism reminds me of a recent complaint by human rights organisations about German police "racially profiling" when checking ID´s etc. In my view it would be a waste of police resources if they were just as likely to ask e. g. my octogenarian white and white-haired mother to prove that she isn´t an illegal immigrant as they´d be likely to ask a black skinned twen. I deem this justifiedly driving up efficiency rather than racism. I understand that it´s unconveniant for people of colour but what can you do? It´s simply a fact of life that chances are higher that you´re less likely to be an illegal immigrant if you look like the average local.

While the UK was never as bad as the US, in terms of discrimination, it has always had obvious examples, as Dominic has pointed out, that were common signs in the 40's and 50's.... When my father returned from the war, he faced signs of "No Catholics need apply" - even later in the 70's, my brother was the first Catholic apprentice at a huge US companies factory - General Motors, or Terex as it became. I sat in interviews in the mid 70's and was asked "What school did you go to?" - as way to religiously discriminate.
Racial undertones and religious undertones still exist in the UK. Particularly now towards Muslims. So, while the UK is very open, as far as attitudes, compared to then, it still has dangerous and bigoted attitudes. Eastern Europe (and Cyprus) is particularly bad towards gays and blacks. The middle-east towards blacks, gays Jews and many others. All countries have discriminatory attitudes. Amos, Israels is well known as anti-gay and ant-black.
We are improving overall, but are a long way from being truly accepting of people for who they are, not what they are.

Hope you won't mind me reminding you of these words in a few years time.
I've been on these forums long enough to remember McIngy and KG making the same proclamations in 2013. Gosh, all of 5 years ago!
Wrong thread?

Where is that from? In my book it´s nonsense. How can e. g.anyone say that family or dynasty are synonyms of race? I learnt at school that races are subsets of a species the members of which can have propagable descendants and there are 4 human races. For me this hasn´t changed. Apart from that I doubt that physical characteristics would identify an Irish from e. g. a Brit.
