Votes for incumbent President Nicos Anastasiades and Akel-backed Stavros Malas, and the rejection of Diko leader Nicolas Papadopoulos, are being widely seen as majority Greek Cypriot support for a Cyprus settlement following the first round of voting in the presidential elections.

I don't see it that way. Mr A. talked the talk to start with but showed clearly he would not walk the walk when push came to shove (sorry about the mixed metaphors!). Assuming the 2nd round comes out to Mr A's lead, there is no guarantee he will listen to either Akel or Mr M any more than he has done in the past. IMHO, he will become even more autocratic throwing ashtrays at dissidents.

I agree. To me it looks more like a vote for the status quo, which is in effect partition. It is working, why fix it?

As a newcomer who has been living in Cyprus a short while, with respect it might help if you spoke with some Cypriots, before posting stuff like this....by the way are you mates with an old poster on here ,called Geoffrey? by any chance.

I might be a newcomer resident here, but we have been holidaying here for many years and during that time spoken to many people here of many nationalities about the so-called Cyprus problem.
My view on the election (1st round) reflects views in several of the local media.
I don't know anyone called "Geoffrey"; however I have seen some posts on another forum by a "Geoffreys"; maybe that is the poster you refer to (??), if so I have never met him.
You are the second person to suggest that - maybe we just happen to have coincident views?

That's very patronising even if you did include the words "with respect" in your statement! In any case, Malas has no clearer view of a solution to the problem than Anastasiades & neither will accept a solution that maintains Turkish troops on the island ............ the Greek Cypriots will simply never agree if this was ever put to them & they both know it!

Didnt mean to sound patronising, The poster is a newcomer to Cyprus, and I suggest its very patronising to Cypriots to suggest that they basically forget about a solution, and just carry on, ( if its working why fix it) especially as only last week the UN are finding mass graves of civilians.

Realism may prevail unfortunately, though I hope not!
