I am using Outlook 2016 to upload all my email messages from my Gmail account so that I can read them offline. I am running Windows 10.

My problem is that the majority of messages are uploaded to both my 'Inbox' folder and the 'Important' folder. I found that if I deleted the mail from my 'important' folder this deleted the corresponding mail in the 'inbox' folder. I got round this by moving the messages from the 'important' folder to the 'inbox' and after a few seconds the duplications were deleted automatically leaving one message in the 'inbox'.

Now what is happening is that the messages that were in the 'important' folder are being uploaded again into that folder, and again after moving....and again....and again....

As an aside why does everyone think their messages are important. This happens so often that the 'boy crying wolf' syndrome has kicked in and I give such messages no more importance than ordinary messages.

Anybody any ideas on the former?

I am surprised that you still have outlook. It was withdrawn and unsupported a couple of years ago.

Check your Rules options. It may say "copy everything to Important folder".

I use Mailbird with Windows 10. It works well.

I have Outlook 2016 and Windows 10. All emails only go into Inbox (also the high important messages). I don't have(or don't see) a special Important folder.

I downloaded Outlook 2016 only a year ago, so I am not sure about Outlook 2016 not being supported.
Rules - No rules in operation.

As someone else on that link page has mentioned I use the Google Mail web page as a back up of all my emails so the idea of deleting messages on the server is an option I don't really want to take as I have several times had problems with my Office 2016 programme and have lost all my .pst folders even though I have backed them up.

It looks as if Microsoft are aware of the problem so will have to wait until they distribute an update.

Agreed, RW! I've been using (the FREE) Mozilla Thunderbird as my email GUI for over 2 years now, and it's superb! However, I've also had another trick up my sleeve for a longer period, which is the MailWasherPRO7 program. Created in NZ by the really friendly, helpful and proactive Firetrust team, it acts as a middleman between your provider's email server and your PC email program.

I have MWP7 set up to check my Virgin Media POP server for incoming mail every 2 minutes. It alerts me to new mails, and I can then get a snapshot of them via the MWP7 GUI. I can mark each mail as friend or foe, mark for deletion or even for blacklist / bounce. It remembers all these user settings.

So none of the crap stuff even downloads from VM to my PC (and is deleted / bounced) at the VM end! The nuisance spambots churning this dubious stuff out 24/7 from Russia, Nigeria, China et al, soon begin to 'learn' that they are sending their shite to an invalid email address, so wasting their time...

Outlook han't gone anywhere. It is still very much an integral part of Office. It was Outlook Express that no longer exists.

Maybe there was a confusion?

Good old MS, they had ...
Outlook as part of MS Office
so they then made Outlook Express a slightly slimmed down (and free) version of Outlook
then in their infinite wisdom, they decided to rename Hotmail ... guess what ... Outlook

It's that simple really, can't understand why anyone would be confused ...

RW, keep telling my three kids (two in their forties ) Android is the way. They won't listen to me!!! Do you reckon I should start slapping them?

Actually, that's not a bad idea for Google to consider. A version of Android that's designed for normal desktop and laptop PCs. All under mouse or touchpad GUI control, with none of the touch screen elements...

Would at least double or quadruple their OS market, and make M$ and Apple shiver!
