I changed to the shark a couple of years ago, I think at the time on a reccomendation from HIC, I was delighted, it worked well and was 75% cheaper than Gillette.

However, for the last couple of months the quality, I feel has deteriorated, rather than shave, my skin feels as if it is being scraped!!! My face is like a battleground with multiple nicks and redness.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I bought a Gillette razor for comparison, resenting paying 4 times the cost of the shark, but the difference and improved shaving experience was immediately noticible, with zero nicks, and no red face!

I do have a heavy growth, the shark coped with that until recently, which is why I felt the quality had deteriorated.

The Gillette I purchased is far superior.

A pack of 10 for £1 probably lasts me 2 years, shaving twice weekly...

I use traditional safety blades. I prefer the shave.

I am a late convert to the safety razor. And no, I don't know why they call them that either. I certainly wouldn't try using one on a plane.

I remember watching my Dad using them when I was a kid, so perhaps it's a subconscious desire to be like him? Having said that, he is a Gilette Mach 3 man these days, from what I remember. I do enjoy a decent shave though, using a nice brush and quality soap. It is especially nice if you have a hot flannel waiting for you afterwards...

But forget to clean the sink out once you are done, and boy does the air turn blue...

Tried the 3 blade and 5 blade razors for a while but always return to the single blade.

The theory is that the single blade cuts the beard whereas the multiple blades tear at the beard.

The type of lubricant is important as well. A good soap and brush and plenty of hot water.

A close shave will last me for 3 or 4 days and it is much cheaper than multiple blades, though not as cheap as Als option.

I forgot to mention that my cheapo Tesco safety razors are twin blade, and also have a lubricating step containing Aloe Vera and Vitamin E

You certainly know the lubricant is working (for the first half dozen shaves, at least) when you rinse off afterwards!

That, plus Palmolive shaving soap sticks from Tesco @ 50p each. Not to mention a smashing Wilkinson Sword badger bristle shaving brush from fleaBay at only £3-99 (free P&P)...

Harrys is just a gimmick. They send you products on a regular cycle, like a standing order but they are just the same multi blades that you can get from any retailer.

£1.75 per blade from Harrys ..... extortionate.

I purchased 40 packets of Wilkinson Sword blades for £10.00. That was 4 years ago. I still have about 20 packets left, 5 blades per packet.

1 blade lasts me 2 weeks, longer sometimes. 5 blades lasts 10 weeks. That is 1 packet. 5 packets per year for the princely sum of £1.25.

Also, when I order shaving cream or after shave balm they send me sample packets of blades. Not all top quality but I can grt 2 or 3 shaves from each for FREE.

The initial outlay for a good razor and brush is expensive but my current set up is more than 10 years old, so again that is value for money.

Multi blades, disposables, shaving gel in a can are all a waste of money and environmentally poor. God knows what gunk goes into some of those cans.

Of course, in my opinion. Everyone has them!!

No one is asking you to change anything, stick with what you are happy with, no matter what the cost.

Does it give you a really close shave? Is it gentle on the skin, in terms of nicks and redness?

Any links to your single blade WS kit would be very much appreciated!

Al, PM is on it's way.

Have now used the Gillette Sensor for 6 days, no nicks, no red face, no scraping. Just a comfortable effortless shave.

You get what you pay for, I am a born again Gillette user!!

Great thread IMHO. But what do the ladies think, when they are wallowing in the bath and shaving their nether regions? My dear wifey always used BIC Sensitive razors, the orange ones.

you don't ask ladies questions like that. A simple "what do you ladies use when shaving your legs?" would have sufficed. And terms like "wallowing in the bath" is not likely to win any friends either.

I cited my wifes fondness for the orange BIC sensitive razors. Just wondering if any of our gals use multiblade razors from the likes of Wilkinson, Gillette, Lidl and what they think of them?
