I have a sudden desire to have Herring in Oatmeal with Skirlie - as a Scots Lass. The Supermarkets have fine oatmeal but not medium [out of stock in Paps]. Where can I buy Herring either Filleted or whole to fillet ourselves? Thank you xxx

I reckon you'll be sure to find tins of Herring Fillets in Lidl, Ruth- as they are firm favourites with our German cousins.

They are also very tasty served up Danish-style as a smorgasbord, on black rye bread scraped with lard! (Plus a tot or two of ice cold schnapps)

AL :D

You could try the seafood shop in the small shopping centre opposite theAtlantica hotel / Paphos Computers on the Way to Coral Bay.

I forgot to add that pickled herring fillets also come in small glass jars. :)

Al, it has to be fresh herring that you fillet and fry in oatmeal - so pickled ones no good. Thanks, Maggie. Must be a shortage. Will try the Seafood Shop, though - just in case! x

Okay, I've 'boned up' on Herring, and find that they are an oily fish, rich in Omega 3 protein and goodness. Would it be worth trying Mackerel as a substitute in this recipe, I wonder? Neither fish (to the best of my knowledge) are endemic in the Mediterranean, so would in any case be imported frozen into Cyprus...

Or how about some other oily fish candidates, perhaps? Pilchards, or Tuna? How about Swordfish, is that oily? Maybe Max can help with suggested Mediterranean oily fish substitutes for Herring?

AL :?

Occasionally you do get whole 'fresh' herring-like fish in Lidl.

Well, Herring are a natural responsibly-fished species in the Baltic Sea, hence their popularity with the bordering countries of Denmark, Germany, and Poland etc.

So yes, I can understand frozen whole Herring being shipped from the 'Frau' Lidl in Germany across to their 'Tochter' (daughter) outlets in Cyprus. But the supply chain might not be continuous, just every once in a while, like Lidl seem to do...
