Just come back from The Mall and the Old E and S Co-op just up the road s to become a new Alpha Mega in the near future. A huge banner was just being unfurled. Good news for many of us. x

Good news indeed, but I wouldn't have thought it was big enough.

Perhaps it is just a food hall?

If I remember the old E&S correctly, I think it's a bigger store than they have now.

Hopefully not such a dangerous In & Out, puts the wife off from going to the store...at least it saves me some hard earned.

Jim, we always go into Alpha Mega by the back entrance. Firstly it is more convenient when coming from Anarita via the motorway and I think much safer than turning left to go up the steep ramp off the dual carriageway. We have never had any problem exiting the store. We usually pick a mid morning time before the schools go home. I remember Lloyd posted a video of coming out of the store, down the ramp and onto the main road, on CL.

We like to use Alpha, lets hope like some past supermarkets that they don't overstretch their customer base.

I used to love the old E&S supermarket during my two 3 month long stays back in 2001. As well as Paps in Chlorakas, when driving back from the Akamas, Lara, Agios Georgios, Coral Bay etc.

Tis a shame that E&S shut down. When did this happen, and why, does anybody know?

AL :?

ps @ Lloyd: Please repost the ramp video if you still have it ;)

If this one opens then I will give it a serious look as it's close by but like all supermarkets, their offers are selective so I will still probably use Paps to pick up on other bargains (ie, when they offer goods at normal (discounted) prices!) ;)

It's a shame they couldn't move into the old Orphanides, just down the road, next to McDonalds. That store for me, was ideal.

Lloyd many accidents have happened on the dual carriageway road with drivers braking to drive left into the multi-car parks, I know there is a way in at the back but the entrance off the dual carriageway is amazingly dangerous for users of the store and folks just driving past, but the main entrance is dangerously stupid, I hope the new store is better thought out by the planers, did I say planers that's a joke. :)

Happy though another supermarket is opening, this must be good for shoppers, being more competition.

Happy in Cyprus wrote: Tue Dec 19, 2017 5:12 pm You have a good memory John. Yes, I posted that video to illustrate how easy and straightforward it was to use that ramp. I've had far worse multi-storey car parks to negotiate in my time.
True. Gatwick multi storey where we used to use the valet parking is a nightmare in anything much bigger than a Smart car - very tight turns with posts on the corners. I can normally judge a gap to the mm, but that was the only car park I ever get a bit tense in!

Incidentally, did;t know there was a rear entrance point at Alpha Mega - we mainly use Paps - is that to the multi storey or to a street level area? Is that where cars are coming from on the left as you exit via the ramp where they have the stop / go guy?

Yes Ian, the cars that pass the front of the store have used the entrance at the back. There is limited parking down the side of the building .

One of the reasons I like Alphamega is because of the parking! I don't think it's too tight driving in and out at all, I've used a lot worse. Plus down at the bottom of the 1st ramp you have the guy letting you know when the ramp is clear to drive up. Then you can park in the shade in summer, out of the rain in winter, the parking spaces are a nice width and if you get the middle space you can just drive in and out without any reversing. If the 1st floor is busy, just drive up one floor, it's usually a lot quieter.

Besides that I like the range of products, the staff are friendly, and they often have someone to help you pack your bags which is appreciated when you've done a big shop on your own.

Its now my 1st choice store too so another will be handy. It's no easy feat negotiating the turns in a double cab but I can now position myself exactly right when coming out from the first floor so I can get on to the ramp with one turn but the car has to be about 1cm from the pillar! No problems at all in my other car which is also quite large but not with the turn restrictions of the double cab. I do seem to remember E&S parking being problematic and I don't think there'll be enough space if it proves popular.

My Mrs hates the ramp at Alpha Mega but loves the trolley lift and shopping there when we are over. I always find the roundabout at the top more of a danger.

I totally agree with Jim that turning left, off the dual carriageway into AlphaMega is a dangerous manoeuvre because of the standard of many drivers in Cyprus. You have to slow down to a very low speed whilst on the dual carriageway in order to turn onto the ramp. That is why we always continue round the corner at the lights and enter the store at the rear.

Hi
I love Alpha Mega but as Jeanne says, the lock on my twin cab is not that good I park on the 2nd level where its quieter. When approaching the ramp I hug the posts and can just get round,no,problem, lights on and keep an eye on the mirror.
When I get to the bottom of the next ramp, hug the wall on the right hand side and can just get round.A couple of months ago, whilst hugging the wall on the right, headlights on at the bottom of the ramp on level 1 ready to swing round a car came up,just kept coming, stopped in front of me.
Then a guy comes down the ramp, passes me on the inside and smashes into the car waiting to come up,chaos!

At SuperHome Centre we never go into the entrance opposite the stadium on the dual carriageway. We turn left at the roundabout and use the Debenhams entrance, and yes, it is a dodgy manouvre, but you are accelerating off the roundabout and travelling at a fairly slow speed when you turn.
The best bit of driving I ever saw was in this area. A 4x4 came out of SuperHome Centre carpark, onto the dual carriageway and turned right. I was in the outside lane and had to quickly turn into the inside lane to avoid a head on collision. The person driving was completely oblivious of the situation and flashed their lights, hooted their horn and waved for me to get out of their way.

There are many entrances and exits direct on to Dual carriageways. Blue cross hospital and the Esso Petrol station are two that come to mind... Indicate and slow down early enough so the car behind has time to pull out
