I can sympathise. Many years ago, we had an Appenzeller Mountain Dog, Bonzo, who simply adored water, anything from a puddle, to a cattle trough, to a river, to a lake. When he could, he would go out of his depth and paddle for what seemed like hours on end with his nose comically stuck up in the air. Could we get him out of the water? Like hell!
Another quirk: we could invite anyone into the house, without any problem. If (s)he sat down, he would try (unsuccessfully) to jump up and lick his/her face in welcome but if he/she tried to leave, he would run to the front door and stand guard with all his 28 kg, if necessary growling. We always had to put him in the kitchen to let our guests leave.

In the old days, me and my faithful VW LT35 tail lift Luton wagon used to travel to Dublin quite often, collecting DEC mini computer kit to bring back. On one trip, I took Polo, our French Poodle. He was a good traveller, and always let me know when he needed a pee én route..
Booked Holyhead- Dun Laoghaire ferry return. Crew were marvelous, allowing me down onto the vehicle deck to feed and water him during the crossing, even offering some choice leftovers from the restaurant! For the return crossing, I had made up time, so arrived at the port two hours early.
Put Polo's lead on and took him for walkies on the beach. Lovely day, sea like a mill pond. Let him off his lead and BANG! He was straight into the sea, paddling around, loving every minute of it, LOL! It took quite a bit of persuasion to get him out!
Return trip on the ferry was pretty much the same, regarding the helpful crew. And I think Polo really enjoyed his two day holiday, he was good company...
