One week they will tell you if you drink 2 glasses of red wine you will live for ever and the following week if you drink 3 glasses of wine you will be dead in 2 weeks. This all tends to come from universities and guess who is funding all this , the good old UK tax payer.

It is The Food Standards Agency on this occasion - £130M per year of taxpayer's hard earned to come out with utter shyte like this...
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has launched a campaign to warn Britons of the dangers of toasting and roasting their carbohydrates, based on the assumption that acrylamide in food causes cancer. This has led to mildly surreal headlines such as ‘Roast potatoes and toast that’s a bit too brown may cause cancer, say authorities’ (The Guardian). In fact, the FSA has gone out on a limb by speculating about a risk that may not exist.

Think you're missing the point. The "expert" on TV tonight said it was only 'burnt' toast, 'burnt' pizza and overcooked (charred) roast potatoes or any other foods which cause the problem. You might want to re-check my Hot X bun photos - "nicely golden", just like the good man said cooked food should be

Seriously, as he went on to say, occasional burnt offerings aren't an issue, but over a lifetime, charred food is best avoided wherever possible. Makes sense to me, though I am as cynical as most with regard to purported health warnings.

Having said all the above, my m-i-l lived to her early nineties and by all accounts was rather partial to burnt toast 8-)
It was tongue in burnt cheek..

Cancer of what? The report did not say.
No doubt we will see millions of taxpayer's money spent on research by university experts to find out.
If I had heeded all such reports during my 73 years on this earth, I would have given up eating and drinking virtually
everything, and have passed on years ago.
Geoff.

Well, "they" do say everything IN MODERATION - and all these scare stories should be taken with a pinch (small!!) of salt.
First it was go to work on an egg.
Then "Eggwina" Currie claimed they were all bad for you, contaminated with salmonella (or something equally palatable).
Then they were full of cholesterol.
Now they're back on the good list - in moderation.
Ditto butter.
Ditto wine.
Ditto chocolate (Yaaaay!   )
Ditto many other previously "bad" foods.

Anyway, I rarely eat toast as the best way to eat it (IMO) is to slather about 1/2cm of butter (the real, solid, salted stuff, none of this namby pamby spreadable vegetable yuk!) on it, so it partially melts into the toast, then plonk a similar quantity of chunky cut dark marmalade on top. My mother always used to enquire sweetly if I'd like more toast with my butter

That toast story was doing the rounds in the early 90s. I seem to recall they blamed it on the free radicals.

Loony Left eh? When will it end?

I want to know how Shane McGowan is still alive. He seems to annually get 6 months to live since the 80s.

I know this specific report is about toast and potatoes in particular, but I think the message to avoid as much burnt food as possible is a sensible one. By the time your sausages or whatever have blackened on the BBQ, there can't be much, if any, health benefits left in them. And the same follows for very dark toast, roasties, chips, etc etc. Besides, does anyone actually ENJOY eating burnt offerings?

He doesn't look as if he is
I know, but you could have said the same thing in 1985 and yet, there he is, still standing! Or sitting, in his wheelchair.

All this talk of toast forced me to go to Marks & Spencer (the one in town so with great difficulty) and buy one of their lovely toasting loaves which I am now enjoying, well done I might add, with lashings of Lurpak.
