Great look back at how Cyprus was, apart from the cringing commentary , When we first started coming to Cyprus back in the 60s we used to see the camel trains, believe it or not.

Pathé have issued many films similar to this. When I was here in 1952, it was still quite similar and I remember well camels, tobacco fields, silkworm cultivation, cotton growing and other things gone in the name of progress. Cyprus has changed a lot in the interim period. Then it was a lovely peaceful place (usually), so unspoilt. But full of hardship for many. All the Cypriot crafts and a few not shown flourished then. I didn't see a camel train,but there were lots of donkeys around and a few ancient looking trucks and of course the village buses!
The roads outside the towns could be tortuous, especially in the Troodos.

By the time I visited in 1968, there was a new road from Platres to Troodos and the RAF base there, so we didn't need to use the old 'seven sisters' which was very scary indeed!

It inspires me to visit the North to see the castles and Churches.

Well worth a visit.
We went over for the first time last month and have been back weekly since. Some of the churches over there are really historic.
The petrol is so much cheaper the savings more than pay for the trips, and annual car insurance at €120 very cheap.

Correct you have to be a resident over there to get fully comp.... also beware many young locals dont bother with insurance,

But Jimgward and Amos, haven't most of the Christian (Eastern Orthodox) churches in the north been sadly desecrated in the past 43 years?

Please, both of you, take photos on your travels to share with us in the PL Gallery! And don't forget the lovely beaches, fishing harbours, and tavernas / restaurants up there too! Not to mention village life in the bars and coffee shops...

I also remember both of those names. I also think that I remember as a child, seeing the Pathe news reel showing at the cinema while waiting for the main film to start.
Were these Pathe news films also shown at some of the main line London train stations way back when?
All this was before owning a TV set was widespread and long before anyone thought of the instant communications that we have today.

The Insurance Company I insure with over there (Dagli) includes that in the policy. As Poppy says it is Third Party - that is fine with me as I only insure the car third party on this side; it is quite an old car so not worth the expense of Comprehensive cover.
In reply to PaphosAl - correct some churches are looking the worse for wear, some not so bad. A few in Famagusta seem well looked after. Will try and get some photos for you in due course.
Please note I do NOT wish to get involved on here with the politics etc of the "divide". There are plenty of others who seem to like doing that!

Correct. My comment about not taking out Comp insurance referred only to this side.
i.e. I wouldn't take it out over there even if it was available.
