Can anyone suggest a stockist of Infomir Mag boxes here in Cyprus? I would prefer to buy locally but find that the price is somewhat inflated by one or two shops. I can buy the box I am considering from Amazon.de for about €80,00 but the price here is more like €150,00.

Certainly Computer SOS sell them, but I don't know the price, I have had mine quite a while now.

Which MAG box are you looking for?
I have a brand new MAG256 box which I have no need for (long story).

I have asked my IPTV provider whether they fully support the 256, as there are comments on various forums that it is wiser to get the 254 at the moment. I am reluctant to buy older tech. given the speed at which technology moves. I have sent you a PM.

Mac,
We supply the MAG254 for €99 including a month free of the MAX package at €22, so €77 for the MAG box with no service.
I do not think you can beat that locally.

Thank you for that, Digby. I am still waiting to get confirmation from my IPTV supplier about Mag 256 compatibility. If it is compatible I'll go with the 256 and, if necessary not, the 254 will the way to go. That is a good price I think.

Just taken delivery of a Mag 256 and ... Wow. Highly recommended if your IPTV provider supports it.

What does it do that the older boxes dont?

My IPTV provider is constantly upping the quality of the streams he provides. The BBC channels, in particular, are being streamed at a higher bitrate than before and my box (which is four years old) could not cope. HD and FHD streams would not play smoothly. It was then decided to recode all the Video on Demand (all the movies are now from Blueray sources with Dolby 5.1) and again my box struggled.
I asked for advice on their forum and the Mag boxes were recommended. There didn't seem a lot of point in buying a Mag 250 or a Mag 254, when the Mag 256 was available. Installed last night and the playing of all FHD channels was silky smooth. So money well spent in my opinion. But not all IPTV providers support the Mag 256 (apparent it depends on the "Stalkerware" version they use). Hence my caveat at the beginning of this thread.

I had a MAG256 recently, managed to set it up with a local provider, safer though to get a Mag 254/5 that are available here as mine came from a local supplier, they set up just the same as the older Mag250..
The MAG256 I could see no improvement in aspects of it's performance over the old Tech of the Mag250's, so why buy the 256?

I looked into all of this before making a decision.

Faster processor, more RAM and HEVC ... and I managed to buy a genuine Mag 256 (brand new) for €75,00.

Well including a poster on here we could not load a service provider initially on the 256, and the 256 was as far as I could tell no faster than one of my old 250's.
I have also looked into the specs on all Mag's about the blurb that Infomir gives you may not be relevant on Cyprus, this you will maybe find out.
I have just bought a 254+1 (locally) a new model and that loads with my server with NO problems, good luck with the 256 do let us know how you get on with it please.

The MAG boxes are designed specifically for the Hotel trade, for distributed TV in rooms....
They happen to be great for IPTV.
I have heard of no reason why the latest is best for that. If it was 4k or something, I could understand.
The experience is very much about the provider and I am happy to pay for a reliable and simple one
I know it can be much cheaper, at the cost of reliability. My supplier has been the same for 3 years and before that I had another one (NTV) that's still reliable....

I have very little comparison to make apart from the fact that one or two friends have Mag 250/4 boxes. I was very impressed with them but the 256 seemed to be better spec. and certainly appears snappier. My box has coped with everything that I have thrown at it and the Video on Demand (which is all FHD and Dolby 5.1) plays seemlesly. My FHD streams just work as well, which my old box just could not cope with. Channels change almost instantly, and all of this with a 10 Mb download (although I plan to change this to 20 Mb in the New Year).
I have my Minix box which I use for finding older tv series and movies. My provider gives me access to 500+ tv channels and 4500 movies (and some tv series). Well pleased and glad to have spent €75,00 for the service. I have had the box for just over a week and the experience has been brilliant. My annual subscription for my service is £75.00, which is just fabulous.

Snappier it's not in my opinion and it was VERY difficult to load the software here on the island, we did mange to get one provider to load, but the performance was no better as far as we could tell, the new 254+1 seems to be the best option living on CY , it is available locally for about €85 so no more expensive and no shipping to CY buying from Amazon, I sold on the 256 late last year to a CL member, I hope he reads this thread and he could maybe comment on the 256.

Hi Jim
Hope you are keeping well.
I have a 254 in the UK and the 256 that I bought from yourself back in January. The 256 is only used for an hour or two when we are over so hasn't had a lot of use and we only have about 6mg satellite internet feeding the 256.
Overall I can't really notice much difference between the boxes but like I say the internet providers and use vary considerably!
Regards
Darrell

Hello Darrell I posted a PM to you many months back but you never opened it until recently, if you need the 256 re-installing contact me any time as I am still in contact with that agent.
Waiting to install service provider on this new version of the 254, a 254+1 I'm told it is the most stable and easy to load for Cyprus. We will see.

It is interesting to read the posts regarding the 256 and the difficulty that some found in setting them up. I assume this is to do with the IPTV providers people use. I do know that - to use the 256 - your provider has to have the right version of "Stalkerware" (as far as I understand) and older versions will not work. My provider uses the latest version and the set-up of the box, including the tweaking of the various video settings, etc. took less than five minutes. I rebooted the box and all was working.
I suppose it is horses for courses ... but having read for years how Mag boxes were superior to Android and other systems, I have to admit they are. For streaming live tv, and catch-up, and films and tv series on demand, nothing could be simpler. Even my wife is happier with the system.

Mac agree with your post, the 256 will be OK once TV suppliers get the correct software loaded, the new 254+1 I have just purchased looks easy to load with the servers who load these systems, the 256 I tried was altogether different, we did mange to load a good server but it was not easy, so my humble is go with a Mag that will load with no problems.
Have to say my old Mags 250 we bought from Computer SOS is still going strong with no problems, it is now five years old.
