If you had just lost your mum you wouldn't really want that for a plate. Or just imagine if you bought a car then been made redundant. You wouldn't like a numberplate reading NO67 JOB.

You have just reminded me- in the sixties a guy used to tear around the Purley area in a Lotus 7, always had a chic beside him. Registration: 2 COX ….

I used to own an XR3 A666 WOS (bought new in 1983). A few years later the DVLA stopped issuing the "number of the beast" I wish I had transferred the number as it would look great on my classic TR6!

I think there are some 999 plated vehicles in Cyprus prefixed KKK.
KKK666 would be worth a few bob.

A vet I knew had a Range Rover with the number " P 1 4 VET ".

In my late teens as an apprentice in Vauxhall Motors Service Dept Luton, once a year, we got a Royal car in for (no doubt a complimentary) thorough service and going-over, ending up looking brand new again.

It was a dark green 1957/8 Vauxhall Cresta PA Cresta Estate. Now this was unusual, as only 4 door saloon PA models ever rolled out of the AC Block production line at the Vauxhall Luton factory. Wikipedia tells me that the 5 door Estate models were coach-built conversions, by hand, at Friary in Basingstoke. Today, they are as rare as rocking horse droppings...

This particular car was used by Liz and Phil as their 'Hunting Shooting Fishing' wagon at Sandringham and Balmoral. It's number plate was a classic:

It probably resides these days in the Vauxhall Heritage Museum (assuming it didn't finally collapse into a pile of rust flakes). As the Royal Family would have long since (mid-80s onward) preferred the new mighty Range Rover for these country sporting pursuits...

I've loads of tales to relate about Range Rovers at that time, but off topic sadly.

Yes, I looked it up at the time and the plate was registered in the UK. Wonder if it's still in Cyprus?

This registration is now a 2005 Blue Bentley and has just passed an Mot in the UK

In 1975 I was in the Royal Navy and serving in HMS NELSON, a shore base in Portsmouth, and immediately across the road from the main gate was the local vehicle registration office. For about 2 weeks during the run up to releasing P registrations, Paul Raymond had a succession of people holding first place in the queue at the door because he wanted to register a car with STR 1 P. Sadly for him the activity drew so much attention in the local press that there was a late decision to withdraw the number!
