Really? That's odd. I haven't heard any gunshots in Polemi. Normally in the hunting season they act as a very early alarm clock.
For an explanation of "soreear" please see the drinking on flights thread.

We have heard shooting today but we are just on the outskirts of Polemi. But there have not been many shots.

This is a translation (via Google Translate) of the article posted by Max:
The summer hunting season began with the first dash taking place this Sunday.
According to CNA, Petros Anagiotos, Wildlife and Wildlife Service Officer, prey are beans, turtledoves, quail, cranberries and cranberries.
He said that Hunting and Hunting Service estimates that hunters this year will reach 16-17 thousand, noting that the maps have been posted on the Thera's website.
In view of the beginning of the hunting season, Mr. Anagiotos urged hunters to renew their licenses, to keep watch on any issue with fires, "to hunt beautiful and nice, respecting their colleagues and the places where they will hunt".
In addition, an announcement by the Hunting & Wildlife Service notes that igniting fire in unspecified areas is forbidden, since under the prevailing weather conditions it is very dangerous to cause a fire. At the same time, hunters are urged to study well the permitted hunting areas before exiting, and to immediately report any illegality found in the following mobile phones of the Service or the Police in 1414.
So lock up your beans and cranberries folks.

For sure the 'beans' should be wood pigeons. Still looking for the cranberries.

Some pretty hefty gunfire out there this morning...and far too close to our villas for comfort!
Is your villa perhaps close to the outskirts of Neo Chorio? When I lived there they came from Nicosia with Buses full of hunters... shooting right from my fence line...

Closer to Polis than that, on the back road up from the Natura towards the Antara..and yes it is a lovely area....we are very lucky.
We did another reconnaissance trip earlier this year and this time stayed in Latchi to give that part of the island a good look. We fell in love with the area between Polis and Argaka. We actually viewed a few properties in Argaka itself and could very easily live happily ever after there I think.
Lucky indeed and we hope to join you in the not too distant future.

They are certainly on the hunt for Grouse, Rock Doves, and just about any poor bird that happens to be invading Cypriot air space! I would have thought that on open fields, Hares would be a prime target too (being classed as game meat)?
Is there not an English version of the
Pafos Press we can read?

Just found a better translation of the lead paragraph in the
Paphos Press link above, on Bing Translator (go eat your heart out, Google!)
"As stated in the CNA, Peter Anagiwtos, Service Officer Hunting & Fauna, the prey are pigeons, doves, quail, trachiles and Corvids."
So what the hell are 'trachiles and Corvids' then? More Bing searching...
No luck at all on Trachiles, I'm afraid, HELP!! Better result on Corvids, though!
Definition of corvid
: any of a family (Corvidae) of stout-billed passerine birds including the crows, jays, magpies, and the raven
Like I said earlier, ANYTHING that flies! Nobody is going to tell me that a Cypriot hunter would kill one or more of these carrion birds, take them home, pluck them, then cook and eat them (spitting out the lead shot), surely???
If my theory is correct, then the question needs to be asked, WHY shoot Corvids in the first place? Is it just simple target practice for the Rambo hunters?
Another thought on 'Trachiles'... Is this possibly any other species of bird that doesn't fit into the Game or Carrion genres? Like Sparrows, Thrushes, etc? Coz I know that these often appear in Taverna chiller cabinets at various times..
Cheers- AL

Too many Crows and Magpies are not good for the smaller song birds and locals will shoot Corvids for the same reason that guns in the UK would shoot them because they are recognised as being egg and fledgling stealers.
Plenty of pubs in the Upper Thames Valley in Oxfordshire would have Crow Pie or Rook pie on the menu in the shooting season, in fact we used to be permitted to shoot Rooks on the nest if I remember things correctly.

Crikey! That's a bit of a surprise and a shock!!
I'm often scaring away marauding magpies from trying to grab eggs and fledglings from Blackbirds and Sparrows nests in the nesting season (which seem to be thrice annually)...
I believed it to be illegal to disturb a Magpie nest in the UK, though. But must admit I've done this myself in the past, using a high reach triple extending ladder up inside our 40ft tall Christmas tree in our front garden, with a 30mph gusting westerly wafting me around. Even then, I still needed a 10ft pole to reach further up to unravel their nest.
Couldn't believe the amount of mud and twigs that fell down to the lawn below! Including a lot of it straight on my head! But the magpies got the hint, and boogered off elswhere. Not long after, we had our tree surgeon around to remove both Christmas trees at the front, as they were getting into a dangerous state, with long branches being torn off in winter storms and falling into neighbouring gardens...
But SHOOT a magpie or crow? I would never ever do that!
Cheers- AL
