Red moon to grace Cyprus on Monday

Cyprus will witness a partial lunar eclipse on Monday night which will be the first astronomical phenomenon of the summer and will see the moon turn red.
According to Chrysanthos Fakas, who is the President of the Cyprus Astronomical Society, the event will be visible with the naked throughout the island after sundown.
“During a lunar eclipse, the earth moves between the moon and the sun and subsequently hides the moon from the sun, in other words, the moon is shaded by the earth,” explains Fakas.

Does this mean I have to watch the eclipse in the nude??

It's cloudy in our little corner of Polemi, so we won't see anything.

Yes, on Monday 7th August 2017, we are blessed with the glorious sight of the disc of the Full Moon being partially eclipsed by mother Earth slightly passing between the Moon and the Sun on their relative orbits.

The partial lunar eclipse takes place on 7 August 2017.

It will start at 15:50 GMT (16:50 BST), and will peak at 18:20 GMT (19:20 BST), when about 25% of its diameter will be covered.

The moon will emerge from the Earth's shadow at 20:50 GMT (21:50 BST). Allowing for our 2 hour time difference, I think you need to get out in the garden NOW folks! Total grey cloud around here near LTN, so no chance of me visually witnessing this event. Sod's Law, as usual...

Cheers- AL :)

Haven't a clue what I am looking at!!!
Looks like a full moon, with another planet visible behind it. I am sober by the way.

Max, if you took that picture of the partially eclipsed Full Moon this very evening, then I have to award you 10/10 for a stunning night sky photo! :o

What next, I wonder? A night photo of Dominic's quaint street lamp? ;)

Cheers- AL :D

You must be in a smashing clear night skies spot in Cyprus there, Mark. As the only planet I can find anywhere near the Moon (on Google Sky Map) this evening is Neptune.

If that is what you are seeing with the naked eye, then you are indeed a fortunate man!

Cheers- AL :)

Notice that very bright spot middle left in Max's partial Lunar Eclipse photo above?

Who would like to try and identify what it is, please (just for fun). Google Moon maps are allowed, of course! AL ;)

Thanks Al

Very clear, but still unsure what I am looking at!!!

Still see a planet behind the moon!

Maybe it's Dominic's street lamp.

The bright spot is actually a surface feature on the moon, (ie a crater) that has high mountains around it, the peaks of which are still gathering sunlight...

Just can't find its name at the moment. Second photo shows the eclipse even better than the first, Max! Tripod, or hand held? Aperture? Exposure?

Cheers- AL ;)

Found the sort of mapped photo I was looking for, but the crater I'm referring to left centre isn't named. I'll investigate further later today...

Meanwhile, let's share the image anyway, as it shows all six Apollo landing sites, which was a feat for NASA...

And whatever banged into the Moon to create the Tycho crater at the bottom, must have been a big booger!

Night night folks- AL :o

Yeah Alan, the second pic was nearly the peak of the eclipse but could not be bothered to wait for that. Hand hold (kind of), ISO 125 - 400 - F 5.6.
Then enlarged on screen and saved in my album with snipping tool...as my camera zoom is only 20x :!:
