Posting in the Politics Section - a reminder

Please when posting, steer clear of mentioning people's personal information which they haven't brought up here themselves. This includes their names.

And I know it is Politics, but let's try and behave a little better than the MPs hey?

I have had to delete two posts this evening, because they contained personal information about somebody. If you can't have an argument without doing that, I suggest you a quick walk around the block to cool off.

As a rule of thumb, it is best to always address people by their forum name anyway. That way, newcomers can follow a thread without getting confused.

Thank you for reading. :)

Awww come on HIC! Many of us on these boards know each other, but Dominic has a point, some people may not want their real name to be disclosed. So where do you draw the line??? How does a newbie protect themselves - simple, we all respect Dominic's request. I know you, you know me, but I don't give a toss how you address me on a forum (Hhmmm, within reason that is!) and more than happy with smudger. What difference does it make? Let's have a peaceful life, Brexit apart that is!!

It's simple really, if someone signs a post with their names, presumably they don't mind being addressed as such. If they do not, then yes, even if YOU know who they are privately, one shouldn't disclose it. Most of us have been sent P.M.s where posters have signed their names, but they do not on any public posts.

As Lloyd says, many of us have known each for years, either in person, or just by posting, we golden oldies do address each other as we have always done. ;)

I'm a relative newbie to Cyprus forums but have no problems with other posters using either my posting name or my real name with which I sign off, I'd like to think that if I met another forum member in the street then we would have a civil conversation whether we had similar views or not!

2 things I would say though, firstly if someone takes offence with something I have said then tackle it in open forum respectfully & don't PM me, & secondly I accept what Dominic says that it can be confusing for newcomers to follow if only personal names are used! Though I do remember the days of MSN's Grapevine chats .............. now they were confusing to follow! :?

I am guilty of using names and I agree that Dominic is right and we shouldn't so will stop forthwith. I also agree with Shane [ oops done it again - Apus Apus!!) re pm's. I only use pm's for sale items as requested and expect people who may have a problem with my posts to tackle it respectfully in open forum.

Just to clarify, I don't think there is any harm in addressing a poster by their real name if they sign off with it. A newcomer will be able to see who is being referred to then.

I have benefitted many times in the past from P.M.s, some with advice, some with understanding, and some replying to mine in a positive manner. I think sometimes we can form an empathy with another member/members. In that case things posted in a P.M. are not necessarily for everyone to read. I see no harm in that.

Happy in Cyprus wrote: Sun Jul 30, 2017 12:55 am The irony of course is that everyone refers to 'Dominic' in their posts...and rarely as Admin.

Almost everyone calls me Lloyd and as my erstwhile girlfriend Jackie points out, many of us have been talking to each other on first-name terms for ten years or more, so I'm certainly not going to change now. I actually prefer Lloyd to HiC. So there!
I really don't know why you have a problem with this.

Similarly, I don't know why you just don't change your forum name to Lloyd.
