Cost of electricity

We used slightly less electricity for the May/June period than we did in 2016 but the bill was higher. I checked and found that the average unit cost had risen 36%. We are on Tariff 05 domestic.Does anyone know of a way to reduce this? Thanks

Install a solar system called net-metering producing your own electricity which means your bill will be very much reduced to perhaps as little as 30 Euro in a 2 month reading. Tariff 05)

If you have no proof that you paid CY£200 deposit in 2007 then you are stuffed!
As far as I know the current deposit is 70 euros if you own the property & 200 euros if you rent, well it was for us & our tenants last year!

Your friend is quite right. We arrived in Oct 2014 and paid the standard €100 deposit. I am aware that early 2015, the deposit increased for new customers to €200.

Didn't know there were different tariffs!
We signed up 20 years ago for whatever was the regular tariff at that time. Will try to check bill tomorrow - too late to go rummaging now- but our recent bill surprised me: it was half of what we usually pay.
We have electric oven (used every day) and gas hob. We also use aircon and fans indiscriminitely. The only difference is that we replaced two ancient fridges with two new fridge/freezers. I was told that this would make a huge difference and was actively encouraged to do this by friends/family members.
Although I was totally sceptical -they were right and the fridges have (almost) repaid the outlay within 6 months!
Our last bill,for a 3 bed house, was 38 euros! I could hardly believe it myself!
If you go to the EAC website you will find the different tariff possible. Tariff 05 is the normal standard one. But what I don't understand is your recent bill with only 38 euros in 2 month. With all the appliances you run, it is not possible. Have a look how many kWh are on your bill. It is perhaps an estimated bill. This is normally the ca amount people pay if they have installed a 3-5 kWp net-metering system to produce their own electricity...

Was the previous reading an estimate then? If they had estimated too much, then taken an accurate reading, you would have much less to pay.

Hang on a mo here please...
We all know that many years ago, many people rented properties, then (for whatever reason in their personal lives) did a 'midnight flit' back to UK, leaving unpaid rent, electric bills, water bills, Cyta landline bills, and so on!
So I can well understand deposits being required for new applicants, tbh...

Yes, we did, in 2003. We finally got our Title Deeds last year and so EAC refunded it to us as a credit on the next bill.
Same with CYTA.

Might have said this before, if so, apologies. But leccie, phone, water (not to mention landlords) did used to suffer a lot from the 'midnight runner' rental brigades in Cyprus, didn't they?
You can understand why they insisted on deposits, until their billing systems saw that you were a fixed and permanent resident, with a long history of prompt payments.
A bit different from here in the UK when you sign up to a new Utility. But here, they Credit Check you to the Nth degree via Experian etc first. Break your contract, and BANG goes your Credit Rating for the next 6 Years!

Interesting Geoff. So are you saying that once you are in possession of your TDs you can march in to the EAC and CYTA offices and reclaim any deposits which may have been paid back in the mists of time?
Correct, provided you have the receipts proving you had paid the deposits. You also need to take along your TDs as they will wish to see them.

10 years ago, the day after taking possession of panoscouse manor and armed with just a contract of sale (photocopy) I called at EAC Polis.
Showed them a photo (taken on my phone that morning) of the meter so they could see the number and the reading. They were happy to accept that and never asked me for any deposit. They did ask if I had the deeds but were happy to accept sight of my contract of sale.
As AL says maybe if the property was a rental then a deposit would have been asked for.

It depends a bit on your Lifestyle but several years ago we changed to Tariff 7. currently , I think, Fixed € 4.94 High period € 0.2999 low period € 0.1231.
High period is June to September Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, all the rest of the year is Low. I you can do your washing etc and use your a/c outwith the High Period it works out much cheaper. It does for us anyway. Contact AHK and they come and sort out your meter, as I recall this is free.

Our property, which we bought in 2003, was a resale (private sale, not developer) not a rental. I have just checked our paperwork and the deposit we were asked to pay to EAC was CYP 100. We were told then we would get the deposit back when we had the TDs - which was last year. We were given a receipt for the deposit, the refund was a credit on the next bill.
