The Sticking point is guarantees and Turkish troops remaining after a settlement, Cyprus/Greece/UK want to abolish the Guarantee system, Turkey dosnt, given that it would only take thirty minutes to put her troops back in Cyprus, if there was trouble in the future, you got to wonder if Turkey really wants a solution, I think any solution that keeps Greek/Turkish troops here is a non starter, Cyprus should look forward not in the past.

A solution would be for Cyprus to join NATO and for NATO to station troops on the island with a mixed contingent of (say) British, Turkish and Greek soldiers commanded by a nationality other than British, Turkish or Greek.
They should also stop calling it a peace process / talks as there is no war / conflict between the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. It should be reunification.

If there is no war / conflict, why have any external soldiers?

Because Turkey fears ethnic cleansing of the Turkish Cypriots by the Greek Cypriots.
The minority need reassurances of their safety until such times as a unified Cyprus feels secure in itself to only require a symbolic NATO contingent. How long that will be, who knows as grievenses and grudges in Cyprus seem to have a long life.

Sorry, but these talks will come to nothing, there is no political will on either side to make it work. Each side wants a solution which is unacceptable to the other.
I totally agree.
The sooner they stop these expensive get-togethers in expensive Swiss mountain resorts the better. Anyway there is nothing they discuss there they couldn't have discussed here!
The obvious move forwards now is partition, i.e. Cyprus x2.
This would merely formalize what is the reality now anyway.
Then everyone living in Cyprus, North or South, can just get on with their lives.
Geoff.

Sorry, but if there is a threat of ethnic cleansing then you can't very well object to the term "peace process", can you?

The most important days were before 1974 and the Greek coup. All 'talks' after have been meaningless. The Greek fascists took over this island at the time and that was the end of discussion.
And your thoughts on the Fascist Recep Tayyip Erodogan

I appreciate your point completely, WHL, and agree with you wholeheartedly. Erdogan is a Fascist without a doubt.
That is the here and now.
However, when we go back to 1974 - and before - there are many in the South who continue to refer to an unfair 'invasion' by Turkey, ignoring the atrocities perpetrated on Turkish cypriots by Greeks and ignoring the aim of the Greek fascists at that time - Enosis with Greece. Makarios included. That man was full of self-interest ( head of Church and State) and was instrumental in the downfall of Cyprus.
Mate everyone involved in the Cyprus Problem, Greek/Turkish Cypriots...Mainland Greeks/Turks..and Great Britain, all made mistakes and all have Blood on their hands.that was in the past....we are here and now, and a fair solution will be a win win situation for all people living in Cyprus.

I travel over to the North probably twice a week, not yet spoken to one TC who wants reunification, there is no trust whatsoever.
That may be true with the people you have met. But there are certainly movements on both sides who strive for reunification.

And I speak to many Turkish Cypriots, who are desperate for a solution, that is why they voted for a solution the last time...

I think people need to be aware of the reality of events in Cyprus before offering their solutions? For example, are you aware that Cypriots who were army conscripts, manning anti-aircraft guns in Nicosia during the first invasion, were subsequently - and immediately - imprisoned in army camps by the Greek fascist 'government' who took over in Cyprus at the time because of their perceived 'leftist' allegiance? Perhaps not. Understandable because it's not widely published...
mate why do you keep going on about events that happened decades ago.....we can all find things that shouldn't of happened....its 2017, the world has changed.....look forward not back

It's precisely because of the things that happened decades ago that Cyprus is partitioned, the hatred runs deep on both sides.
We know the History, and I would say the majority on both sides do not hate as you put it, their main concern is a better life for their kids,,the ones that hate. Golden dawn/Grey Wolves are a minority.

Because history informs how people in Cyprus react now, mate?
Are you Cypriot?
We're not talking ancient history... would love to share your optimism.
No mate Im English, but I have great Cypriot friends on both sides....my best mate for over fifty years, from school back in London is a Turkish Cypriot, who lives in the north and I stay with him many times over the year, i speak to many Turkish Cypriots whilst over there, and I have never heard the hatred some on here speak of, they want a unified Cyprus where all are equal I get the impression they dislike the Turkish mainland settlers more then the Greek Cypriots.

Unlike you, I can't speak for the majority, only the people I know, on both sides.
Did the majority of Turkish Cypriots not vote in favour of the last reunification talks...does that not tell you that in fact they do want a united Cyprus.
