I haven’t been to Lidl for several years but had a hankering for the bourbon vanilla ice cream in the red tub. I looked in all the freezers but couldn’t see any, does anyone know if the still sell it or is it just out of season

Many thanks

Neil

I've been waiting for weeks for it to reappear. The tub has changed colour, it's now cream coloured. No idea when it will be in stock again.

Do what Max used to do, and ask the Customer Services desk at Lidl.

We used to buy this , then I wondered why it was so cheap? A large tub for about 5or 6 euro, so I had a little look on line,

From google
What are the ingredients in bourbon vanilla ice cream?
SKIM MILK, WHEAT FLOUR, SUGAR, WHEY, GLUCOSE-FRUCTOSE SYRUP, COCONUT OIL, PALM OIL, COCOA1 (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), GLUCOSE SYRUP, NATURAL BOURBON VANILLA FLAVOR, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, LOCUST BEAN GUM, GUAR GUM, SALT, SODIUM BICARBONATE, AMMONIUM BICARBONATE.

Thats the reason its cheap,

Wheras this is the ingredients of Walls Vanilla Ice Cream:

reconstituted skimmed milk, water, glucose syrup, sugar, coconut fat, fructose, whey solids, stabilizers (guar gum, locust bean gum, tara gum, carrageenan), emulsifiers (mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids), flavorings, and colors (annatto norbixin, curcumin).

I guess the big difference is that Lidl's contains wheat flour as the second biggest ingredient, which is a surprise.

This is Carte Dor:
Reconstituted skimmed MILK, sugar, glucose syrup, coconut fat, water, fructose, glucose-fructose syrup, exhausted vanilla bean pieces¹, stabilisers (guar gum, locust bean gum, tara gum), emulsifiers (mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids), natural vanilla flavouring¹, colour (carotenes).

Looking on the web, you are correct, most cheaper brands use all sort of unhealthy stuff to produce their ice cream, its been a right eye opener for me, and in future i will avoid them, and as a treat just get the high end brands that just use natural i ingredients ,

From google.
Many commercial ice creams are highly processed, containing high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, and stabilizers like cellulose gum or carrageenan, which can cause inflammation, digestion issues, and weight gain. While high-quality brands use simple ingredients (cream, milk, sugar), cheaper options often use additives, processed oils, and emulsifiers to create texture and extend shelf life.

Key Concerns with Ice Cream Ingredients
Additives & Fillers: Ingredients such as cellulose gum (derived from wood pulp) and carrageenan are used to add bulk and prevent melting, but they can trigger digestive issues, bloating, and intestinal inflammation.
Unhealthy Fats & Sweeteners: Many brands use cheap vegetable oils and high-fructose corn syrup, contributing to heart disease, metabolic issues, and obesity.
Emulsifiers: Mono- and diglycerides or polysorbate 80 are common to prevent fat separation, but long-term consumption may strain the liver and disrupt gut health.
Artificial Colors/Preservatives: Some additives, like titanium dioxide (used for whitening), are banned in Europe due to potential carcinogenicity and DNA damage.

Best vs. Worst Choices
Best: Look for simple ingredients—cream, skim milk, sugar, egg yolks—like those found in Häagen-Dazs or premium organic brands.
Worst: Budget-friendly "frozen dairy desserts" in large containers often have the longest lists of additives, artificial flavors, and stabilizers.

For a healthier option, you can opt for brands that skip the gums and artificial additives, or consider making your own with simple dairy ingredients

Adding wheat struck me as being particularly daft, given the market for gluten-free food.

The reality of that is that it is just a thickener I imagine. Cellulose is in every plant there is.

Lidl were selling ice cream making machines for about 20 euros last year. You can make your own then, choosing your own ingredients. Quite easy to do and problem solved

Nigella Lawson has recipes for very quick and simple ice cream. The coffee one is fantastic. No ice cream maker needed. It's basically cream, thick condensed milk, and coffee. It really is fantastic and takes a few minutes to make.
