Cyprus to test SMS emergency alarm tonight

The Interior Ministry is introducing an emergency SMS alert system and will conduct a test of the new service at around 7 pm today, sending a message to all mobile subscribers across Cyprus.
Residents who receive the message are asked to remain calm. The ministry has issued the following guidance for when an emergency alert is received:
If there is a basement in your home or a neighbouring property, proceed there immediately. If you are inside a building, stay there and keep away from doors and windows. If you are outdoors, move to the nearest building.
In schools and hospitals, staff will activate the necessary protocols. Until further instructions are issued, residents are asked to remain in basements or indoors.
The Cypriot government has received criticism over it’s failure to set up an emergency alarm system before. Critics said that the system could have saved lives during a fire that devastated Limassol in July 2025.
