Flights through a travel agent

When booking a flight through a travel agent how do they get their fee?
By the airline paying them commission or do they get paid by you for their services rendered.
Is it always better and cheaper booking yourself online.
Any help or advice please.

Travel agents get commissions from airlines or charge you a fee on the ticket price, it is not always cheaper to book yourself via the internet though as some travel agents are very good a finding low fares you do not see.

I have travelled extensively worldwide for over 40 yrs on business and for leisure and used many travel agents but nowadays it’s all booked online myself for convenience, I don’t think I have been to a travel agent for at least 15 yrs.

I have had all sorts of issues with tickets booked through agents, given up on them, and always book direct with the airline.
